hi

seeing as the season of colds and viruses is looming i was thinking about giving my dd a glass of oj in the morning for the vit c?

shes 21 months and has milk first thing inthe morning, and just before bed. other than that she just drinks water. Ive given her a taste of oj and she likes it. Should i water it down? and i was thinking about giving her half the amout of milk inthe morning then the oj?

do you think thats ok?

probably best to dilute it, partly for her teeth, partly because some little ones find OJ quite acidic on their tummies.

i would follow it too soon after milk though- it'll curdle in her tummy.

I always water down fruit juice for my daughter. I gave it to her from when she was young at about 10% juice, the rest water, since about the age of two I just do it vaguely half and half. I know dentists recommend its watered down.It might not be a good idea to follow milk with OJ, why not just do one or the other or give her oj during the day.

There are plenty of other things that have more vitamin C than OJ - I am pretty sure strawberries have more for example. Some children can actually have a reaction to OJ - it causes my DS1's eczema to flare up for example. I am sure most doctors would say if she had a good balanced diet she shouldn't require 'supplements', also the upside of your dd catching bugs is that she will develop the immunity for future seasons. Some studies show that the more bugs a baby catches when they are young from being around other young children mostly, the reduced risk of childhood leukeamia etc. In other words I think it would be better to just take 'normal' precautions like handwashing and keeping away from sick kids where possible and 'chilling'. Water is the best is the general wisdom, as far as drinks go. My DS2 is 2 and he won't drink milk anymore although it is on his cereal and he eats plenty of other dairy products. I hope that helps and doesn't offend. Sim

This might be controversial but I give DS1 a spoonful of the haliborange vitamin syrup every day. He loves it.

oh. well she eats plenty of fruit and veg. she was just constantly ill last year and i had to have loads of time off work. I dont think there was a week that went by that she was well for. So i just thought a bit of vit c boost on top of what she is already getting may help.

I dont intend to stop the water, but just a small amount of oj cant do much harm can it?
ill watch out for skin reaction too.

shoptilidrop if she's eating lots of fruit and veg she's probably getting her daily dose of vit C, and as it is water soluble any extra vit C she has will just come out in her wee anyway, her body won't store it, so no, you won't do her any harm by giving her a bit of orange (or other fruit) juice, but it's not likely to boost her vitC levels either, if she has a balanced healthy diet.

It's a good idea to water it down - 50:50.

My DD is sensitive to OJ - or was when she was little (still refuses to drink it at age 10). She would get tummy and bottom troubles for several days after drinking it. She was always fine with diluted juice, processed juice (eg Sunny Delight) or low acid versions (which we could get in the US). It was just the regular OJ that was a problem.

I think if kids are going to have a problem with something, they instinctively know. When we force them to have something is when we encounter problems.
