Swallowed Game piece

DS swallowed the metal marble from his mousetrap game yesterday. It's got no sharp points and won't disintergrate so I thought 'let nature take it's course'

His Nursery Teacher asked me if I'd told the GP. I said 'No, it will pass@ (hurh hurh ) now I feel I'm being slack. If I'd marshalled him down to the docs I'd be a 'fretful mum' but now I feel uncaring

Other than not let him put the wretched thing in his gob in the 1st place, what would your advice be?

If you hadn't seen him do it then you wouldn't even know!! As long as it is relatively small I can't see it being a problem, it is round and smooth and should pass naturally, you'll just have to keep looking for it as it would become a problem if he didn't pass it.

You could rind NHS direct for their advice but I have found them to be a bit useless

The narrowest part of the bowel is the ileocaecal valve and it takes up to 12 hours (max 24) for things to reach there. If it was yesterday, I think you are safe and it will, as you say, pass

My DS swallowed a ball bearing a few yrs ago when he was 3. This was after a period of 6 months of self-building our house extension where he hadn't sustained so much as a graze on the building site!
Took him to Casualty as a precaution as agree with Fizzy that NHS Direct were generally useless.
His breathing was fine - it was obvious he had swallowed it straight down and hadn't got stuck anywhere. They didn't even do an X-Ray as they said it was highly likely to pass through by itself as it was a smooth round object (rather than mis-shaped or jagged which had more potential to cause problems).
Sure enough approx 48 hours later, it reappeared 'naturally'! So I wouldn't worry.
The whole scary hospital experience taught DS a lesson re the consequences of swallowing things and we have had no repeats since (touch wood emoticon).

The Marble has returned. Nuff said. Intact, doesn't look like it's been on a 2.5 day journey
