Is SMA White ok for an 11 week old baby?

Amanda01 · 26/05/2007 12:13

my lo is 11 weeks tomorrow, she's been on SMA gold since birth, she'd had a few problems with it, it seemed to be upsetting her tummy & i'd planned to change her onto a different brand ... however, she seemed to settle down before i'd actually decided on a new milk & was fine for a few weeks.

the last few days she's got more unsettled again, and her poos are really splatty & she's really farty again!! plus, she'll seem STARVING, then seem like she doesn't like the milk, can't really be bothered to finish it & grumble all the way thru her feed ... then be hungry again sooner than she'd due her next feed, if that makes sense?

i think i'd like to try her on a hungry baby milk now (as i definitely want to try her on a different type now, and i don't want to have to change to 'hungry' in another months time), its not too soon is it? it seems like she just can't be bothered to drink the amount of milk that she needs to fill her belly??

i hope that all makes sense, i'm a sleepy woman today, yaaawn!!!

xXx

Breast milk is always a good one.

sma is known to make babies very windy/farty/sicky.

try changing to a different milk. we were on farleys. hungry baby milk can make them very windy/constipated cos it is much harder to digest especially at a young age.

I've not heard good things about SMA with regards the digestive stuff. We use Cow & Gate hungrier baby, but ds is 4 months now and we've only just switched. What does your HV advise?

Try aptimal,

My son started on SMA and was awful with it, I switched to aptimal and he was much better

SMA for my DS ment we were up every hour on the hour it was a total night mare switched to farleys (the normal one to start with) and he was fine straight away. then the hungry one around 7 months again was fine with that, only thing was I tried the purple one of those for follow on but it wasn't suitable for him (can't have been enough calaries at the time as he started waking in the night again.) but i'd deffo recommend farleys.

iirc you're not ment to use the hungry till 6 months - or is that the follow on?

My DS was older (4 months) but SMA did not agree with him, and SMA white was even worse. Aptimel was the only one that worked for us.

Think allgonebellyup's comment was a bit uneccesary when Amanda is asking for advice on formula .

meto, I think that's follow-on.

egg, yes, allgonebellyup's comment was entirely unneccessary.

1stly, 'allgonebellyup' how DARE you?!?! you don't know me, don't you dare judge me & give me the old 'breastfeeding' BS!!! wow, the nazis live on!!!!

my health visitor hasn't been much help so far, has the 'try different ones until you find one you like' way of thinking ... but i'd rather not keep switching!!

thanks for all the USEFUL replies ... its nice to know some people do help, rather than judge ... grrrrr

I have heard 'bad' things about SMA as well, a lot of RL friends started on SMA and had colicky/windy problems and then used Cow and Gate which seemed to stop it.

(no personal advice I'm afraid!)

I didn't think people were actually like this.

Glad you've found most replies useful, Amanda.

lmao, wow you are a real bitch!!!

YES i have breasts, and flat nipples, and a child who wouldn't latch, and the empty box where the anti-biotics for mastitus once lived, because people with the same BAD attitude that you have, convinced me that my child would grow an extra head if she wasn't breastfed ... screw you & get the hell out off my thread!!!! ... unless you're looking for a fight, in which case PLEASE do carry on blabbing

lissie, your lo was ok with sma white from 2 weeks?

yes amanda. he was a 9lb2 baby, very very hungry and i found that sma gold gave him a bit of colic but the sma white satisfied and settled him.

allgonebellyup obviously lives in an undeground bunker formerly known as a cave - ignore her.

I wouldn't recommend hungry baby milk if she's already having problems. Do try a different brand though I'd avoid cow and gate as it has a reputation for causing odd poos as well.

If the symptoms continue you could try infacol as a first port of call and if no joy then, pursue your health visitor for other options liek nutramigne hypoallergenic milk, which can be easier to digest.

Also it is completely notmal for babies to go through 'always hungry' episodes, especially around growth spurts and your LO is due one.

ps allgonebellyup, i was desperate to bf, didnt even buy bottles but after a crash cs, uterine infection and being practically unconscious for the first 48hrs of ds's life i was unable to. my failure to bf was a major factor in severe pnd... not helped by people like you!

for all you know i could have had a mastectomy! how dare you make judgements from the other side of a keyboard. last time i checked bf was a CHOICE not an obligation!

Thanks for the replies from me too, we're unused to formula feeding ourselves and every little bit of wisdom helps.

tbh i think it is a case of trial and error. different babies like different milks. wouldnt recommend follow-on milk tho, waste of money and ds hated it!
