Good Lord! I have no idea. my ds smelt of chips for a while then i realised it was the olive oil for his cradle cap!

are you actually confusing him for a plate of chips?

Serious question - definitely vinegar and not salt?

BethAndHerBrood · 05/12/2006 16:01

Miaou, I know where you are going with that question, definately vinegar. Not a whiff of salt to be sniffed.

It can't just be mine, surely??

Why salt? What would that mean?

DS1 always has a whiff of vinegar about him when he wakes up. He does sweat quite a bit when he's asleep. but I put the smell down to large amount of garlic he consumes.

Should I be worried though? Now you've got me thinking.

oh i just remembered that my dads feet sometimes smell of vinegar and it turned out he's diabetic. the doctor said it was to do with fatty acids being broken in a diabetic, acetoacetate is formed in a side reaction.when it breaks down carbon dioxide and acetone are formed. Acetone cannot be used by the cell and therefore builds up in the blood. some of this is given out through the skin to give off an acid odour. now his blood sugar his balanced the vinegar smell has gone.

Hmmm yes I wondered about that - it was the only link I could find with the vinegary smell.

Can you be born diabetic? [ignorant emoticon] How old is ds, Beth? May be worth going to the GP because if he/she suspects it there are lots of other questions they could ask that will help to decide what to do about it.

This is really interesting because ds2 really really smelled of vinegar when he was a baby! He was quite vile smelling..! Nothing like ds1 at all. He's 2.6 now and generally a lot less smelly, but we didn't do anything about it. He sweats more than ds1, gets hotter and can't easily control his temperature - for instance he only has 1 fleece blanket at night as we found he'd be literally soaked through if he had a child's duvet, or another blanket on him.

I'm interested in the diabetes thing, although don't think ds2 has this - but he's due to be tested for Coeliac disease as I've got this and it's partly hereditary - and I'm thinking about diabetes as this is linked to Coeliac disease - they're both auto immune disorders.

anyway, interesting to hear of other smelly vinegary babies..!

Dd2 used to have that vinegary smell if she got sweaty when she was v small. She also had smelly feet when a baby - v odd. Luckily it seemed to go as she got older.

DD always has acidic breath and nappies when teething-not a permanent whiff though....

DS2 is 21 weeks. The smell comes mainly from his neck, and his head. You know how their hair goes all damp and curly when they sweat? It stinks!!! He does like to be well wrapped up!! I haven't noticed it on his feet, tbh.

well one of the symptoms of diabetes is excess sweating and also urination. there are others but i don't really no them off hand. if he is sweating lots and smelling of vinegar it could be a possibilty. or it could just be that he has eaten something particularly acidic.
