Fears you have had to combat...

since you have been a parent?

I am due my first in a couple of weeks and have realised that I will soon have to be a spider-mover and the wasp and bee swatter (I have a bad phobia of bees and wasps) because I am obviously the adult and don't want to pass my fears onto my boy.

I also hate snot - it makes me physically sick but my boy's nose will have to be picked because no bugger else is going to do it. I'm sure I'll get used to that anyway.

Anyone else been a wimp in the past and had to toughen up?

yes - to snot - but strangely, your child's snot is oddly like an extension of your own (conjures up a nice picture) so I can deal with this.

Spiders, no, unfortunately not even having 2 kids has cured me - however, DD1 (nearly 6) will remove them for me - somehow I managed not to pass on my fear, my kids just pity me

i am bravely grinning and chatting about spiders

and when we flew with ds for the first time i had the same spider-grin fixated on my (really terrified) face

definitely green snot for me too. I can handle nappies and vomit but not snot.

Thankfully so far my children are not naturally snotty.

people being sick - i have to throw up in sympathy (green face). dd had reflux so i got rid of that one (well, for babies anyway!). visited friend's new ish baby and the baby threw up on me - i didn't even retch

Dogs....I am terrified of dogs....
I think....to my credit....neither of my children are.....I always tried to say....its ok...they will just go away....when they sniffed around....and inside...I would be petrified.

Not really anything I don't think. But yes snot you will have to come to terms with the idea of having snot smeared on your shoulder for the next two years.

Do you really kill bees?

Report
Ilovemyboy · 07/11/2006 12:29

I don't kill bees. I don't do anything with them. At the moment, I sit in another room until DP can move them.

This is going to have to change however. I will most probably just veer them towards the window with a paper or something. Makes me come out in a cold sweat just thinking about it.

i used to be nigh on phobic about wasps ,before having my son and remember waking one night hearing a strange noise in the room and turned on the bedside light to discover it was covered with about 6 wasps ,i leapt out of bed grabbed son put him on the landing and went back into the room and fought to the death (thiers obviouslry) with the wasps ,now i can cope with them but they bring out maternal killer instinct !

I've still not conquered my wasp and bee phobia (well bees I'm not so bad with) - but I have got a very large bottle of wasp and fly killer at hand during the summer months to spray and run away quickly.

I've had to get over my fear of lifts (bit hard pulling a pushchairs up loads of stairs LOL).

Being just like my mother.

Touching worms and slugs.

Dealing with vomit in a closed environment (car): actually, in that case, a part of me that IS like my mother came to my rescue and coped like a real, well, Mum. For which I'm very grateful to her

The dentist.

I have an appointment tomorrow with the kids and am dreading it as I am soooooooo scared, don't want to scare the kids. We haven't been for a year as I am that bad and then couldn't find a dentist. Need to go as DD's second teeth are coming through at funny angles and I have toothache.

Am so scared it will hurt though - I hate it when you have a check up and they stick that metal prong in your tooth......

spiders (I manage an 'oh look' and a scurry out of the room at double speed!)

vomit (still makes me retch but have to do it!)

On a slightly more serious note. . . food. Not that I'm scared of it but just don;t want to pass on my fear of becoming huge to Dd, I want her to enjoy food sensibly (not count calories).

dentists - had to join when ds was born so that he could be registered. I too hadnt been for years. As a result needed 2 fillings and a tooth out dont think iwill ever overcome that fear. I'm also with bluejelly on the baby issue. until ds was born i had never held a baby through fear that they would 'break' now i think i could juggle 3 of 'em
