Wind getting in the way of weaning

After about 7 mouthfuls my LO (6m) starts to go red in the face, refuses any more food and 'moos' i.e. needs to be winded. Its a total pain as he never gets a good amount down at any meal.

I would have thought at 6m+ the burping thing would have passed...

I've tried doing it without bfing first, no different.

Anyone else in the same boat? Any techniques to recommend?

I think they only need tiny amounts at first and 6 or 7 mouthfuls is prob plenty. I don't think you have to worry too much about getting lots into him until he's a bit older, he will still get the main bulk of his calories and nutrition from breastmilk/formula until he's 1.

We did babyled weaning which worked for DD as she was in control. I know it's not for everyone though. Smile

Agree, I'd just offer food once a day and put it on his tray so that he can feed himself.

Have you noticed that its worse with certain foods? It might be worth keeping a food diary Smile

Don't forget too there is a Mn weaning section Smile

Once a day?? I've been giving him 3 meals...is that really bad? I thought if he likes it then he may as well go for it.

According to the nhs its best to work your way to 3 meals a day between 8 and 9 months.

It's not really bad but with your concerns over weight I'd cut right back as the milk will be more calorific than most food, just try to look on food as exploring taste and texture rather than trying to fill him up, he needs his milk to fill him up.

Try to have a look at which meal or meals he is most tired at or which suits you least and cut one out. You might find it easier for instance to give him a bottle at 7am, some breakfast at 8am then bottles all day until your evening meal when you could give him some of yours, providing you watch sugar and salt levels. Just bottles in the day might work best for you if you are out and about, or you may prefer not to give him dinner or breakfast, whichever works for you. He may whinge for a bit but he'll soon get used to it Smile

If he wants a bit of what you are eating in the day, either give him a little or try to eat your lunch while he naps.

Try not to give him whole wheat foods either as it will fill him up and stop him taking enough milk Smile

Really sorry, got a bit mixed up with another thread.

The nhs thing does apply to bf and ff babies though and you might want to read this on kellymom.

Stupid phone! I'd go for baby led weaning, give lo bottle/ beaker of usual milk along with finger foods, toast, Rusk, cheerio type thing for breakfast, milk and fruit and veg for lunch and same again in evening. I've found that once started with 3 meals it's best to offer something each meal time instead of cutting back, even if it is just half a slice of toast. I've also had a couple of babies that struggled with mush and needed finger foods the other one just devoured everything he was given.
