Any top tips about being a good/ better parent?

I have a young DS, and I would like to hear others' pearls of wisdom, perhaps from parents with older DCs who have thanked them for certain things they did when they were growing up. That program about child geniuses earlier made me a bit sad, and I was saying to my OH that I want my child to know that we love him and are proud of him always.
I don't want a bunfight, so please no argumemts about BF/ FF, sleeping arrangements, discipline etc.
