Leaving upstairs window open with 3 year old.

So me and dh don't agree. He keeps leaving the bathroom window open. Admittedly, ds would have to climb on loo and lean right over. But if he did that he would fall out. Dh says our 3 year old would never do that - it's too high up. I don't agree. What if he gets curious? So we are having an open/shut/open/shut situation and I'm getting cross. Am I being unreasonable??

i'm with you, our windows are always closed when dc are upstairs (unless we're there and actively supervising), you just never know.

I'm with you too. Mine are 5 & 4 and I still don't trust them near open windows.

get window restrictors.

No I would close them, I had climby three year olds and used to go round closing upstairs windows in houses we were only visiting .... which was a bit awkward!

Your 3 year old may not climb up today but he may tomorrow. That's 3 year olds for you. Windows closed here.

Windows closed here when dc are upstairs too. We do now have restrictors on their bedroom windows, cost about £35 per window to do.

I leave mine open. None of mine are crazy climbers. DP is generally more risk averse than me and shuts them.

Closed. Ds is a whirlwind of mischief and has proven to be both a climber and an escape artist. We have restricters on upstairs windows (which DH cheerfully undoes without telling me) but I don't like to leave ds's windows on them even so. He's dexterous and they are technically removable...

This time last year I was working in a children's hospital. Off the top of my head I think we had about 5 kids admitted who'd fallen out of upstairs windows. Generally onto their heads. Thankfully only a couple of skull fractures and no long term damage between them but even kids who you'd think aren't climbers may well lean out the window if (as often happens on summer nights) there's something interesting going on outside after their bedtime.

Closed until restrictors are on. My Dh is same as yours. I've spent ages actually trying to find the right kind of restrictors for our windows, bought them today so am looking forward to getting them on.

I imagine Eric Clapton's son had a mother and nanny who thought as your husband did. Is it really worth risking, when there's no discernible benefit to doing so?

will it close on the latch i.e. a wee bit open but locked

No, no latch. It just opens. Perfect storm, funny you mention that. I was reading his story last night and decided I am so in the right here!! Miaow - I know exactly what you mean. And that is the problem. I'm happy for all the top little windows to be open. But the bathroom one only has the big open out one. No top window. Anyway, decision made. Thank you!!

Open. It'd be like a furnace if closed at the moment.

so are people putting their DC to bed in rooms with closed windows, in this heat? I should think DD would be more likely to be in hospital from heat stroke than falling out of the window if we did that.

Always on the latch - so about an inch open. DD is 2.11 & a real climber! DSs (16 & 13) get completely fed up of me reminding them to leave their windows closed or on the latch if either DD comes into their room or they leave their room.

I'm fairly obsessive about it TBH!

During the day all windows open dd only goes upstairs alone to the toilet really. The main labding and bathroom windows both have restrictors built in which I have difficulty in opening wider. The small top windows are pretty much open constantly at the moment otherwise the house would just be an oven.

ds is 2.5 and I have had his window open this past week, I have however used the baby monitor and have been up the stairs at the first sound of any movement. So, more work for me, but more comfortable temperature for DS.

I got lockable window restricters put on all mine. They sit or stand on sills often. My 2 year old thinks it's funny to throw things out. 15 pound odd a window - I would never never never leave them open otherwise
