How big are your childrens' bedrooms?

And how much space do your children need in their room? I have 4 children, 2 girls, 2 boys.

I used to be in a lovely, large 3 bedroomed house - had a massive bedroom, another double bedroom, living room had 3 three seater sofas, a dining table and still loads of space (also big garden and utility room), big garden. I loved it, however the third bedrroom was small and when my fourth was born the council said because the small room wouldn't accommodate a second cot I needed a bigger place so they moved to me a 4 bedroomed place that was tiny! three rooms were so small you could hardly move once the bed was in and the living room was small.

I moved again, back to another 3 bedroomed, which is not large as the last 3 bed house but is a good size and very nice, and the smallest room gets a double bed in it.

Now, although we are all happy here and it seems big enough to me, my neighbours are wanting to move as they say their houses aren't big enough and they ahve less children than me so I'm wondering how much room should children have?

I know some people think for privacy reasons, each child needs their own room but I'm talking just space not privacy. (and I know councils and housing associations say that 2 same sex children can share up to the age of 16 so they obviously don't think you need a room to yourself for privacy!)

I have the smallest room, boys share and girls share. Girls have a fair bit of room to play (they ahve bunk beds), boys have enough room to build their train track! (not old enough for bunk beds yet)The living room seems spacious enough for them to play in, they often all run aaround in there no problem anyway!

They have a nice garden and summerhouse to play in as well.

Hello OP.

I'm sorry that you are finding the space in your new home an issue. I can't say how much space kids actually need and really think what others have isn't important.
Look at the area you have and the needs of your dc. If it makes more sense for girls to have smaller room as boys are younger and have more space, then do it like that. If your lounge is big enough to take more stuff from their bedrooms this may help too. I think you will stand more chance being rehoused if you can give examples of what you have tried and why it isn't working. A garden and summer house are great but don't forget how many months these will be out of action.
Good luck, hope you can find a better solution.

hi, thanks for reply but don't really want stress and finances of moving again. we are all happy here, I feel space is fine in this current house, the first house was biggest (although third room was box room) the eond house was tiny, the house I'm in now is plenty big enough I think (other than kitchen) and i love it, I'm just surprised people in similar houses with one less child want to move somewhere bigger. This house is so much bigger than last house I am very grateful for this one, so maybe it is too small and I can't see that?! I tend to sleep better on the sofa so am often there, so one child could move in mine really but then it would be hard to do it fairly and like I say, to me, both boys and girls seem to ahve enough space ; i'm just wondering if I am wrong to say this

i know without giving measurements its ahrd for anyone to advise though - must try and find tape measure!

On the bright side Minnie smaller houses less space is easier to keep clean.

FWIW. If bedrooms are too small I would spread their stuff to lounge. If you like space and privacy in lounge, fill the bedrooms.

Do you have toys/ clothes that aren't in use stored away. I use loads of those seal and vac bags as we have a lot of damp sometimes.

Are all the outside toys stored in the summerhouse and maybe could you put other spare toys in here.

How old are your dc, it might help others to comment too.

Some people just have too much stuff, or are disorganised or don't like the rest of their family

My DD has a small bedroom but a big playroom - but barely any of it is usable most of the time because she strews stuff around.

Sounds like you have a nice house that suits your family - don't worry about other people if you're happy. Smile
