It's no help I know but my DD was pretty much the same although she has improved slightly this last month or so (she has just turned 2)

I've come to the conclusion that she just doesn't need as much sleep as most kids her age apparently I was exactly the same as a child too

Sounds like he's overtired and overstimulated - he's got too much to process and he's staying awake to deal with it all. I would cut out all the taking him to places and 'trying to wear him out' - it has the opposite effect on toddlers. They need calm environments and lots of sleep. How's his daytime napping?

Had similar issues around that age - although he had a long early afternoon nap which probably wasn't helping. Often wouldn't actually fall asleep until gone 10pm!

However, even on days when he had a short nap, he still just wasn't tired even at 9pm.

I came to the conclusion that some children of that age just don't need a huge amount of sleep or certainly need less than the alleged 12 hours..

Bodyclock - can you get him up a little bit earlier?

Nap - move this forward in the day if you can.

We found that moving to a bed was helpful.

However, it did improve when he stoppped napping at around 2.7 and improved still further the more active he got around 3yo
