Friend of 5 yo dc is very sick. What to say?

A friend of my 5yo has become unexpectedly very sick. It sounds like there is a possibility that there may not be a good outcome. I don't want to go into too many details. The class has been told the child is in hospital. Does anyone have any ideas about ways to prepare my ds for what might happen? Any books? The whole thing is just so awful and sad, it's hard to know what say or not say.

I'm very sorry to hear this. My DD lost a dear friend this summer, she was 5 too.

Badger's Parting Gifts is good

If they are particularly close,

this from Winston's Wish is good too.

You will get more ideas at the Winston's Wish website.

Thoughts with the family, I very much hope that the child will recover and none of this will be necessary.

Also talk to the school. Ours has a stash of books suitable for various circumstances that families can borrow.

I wouldn't do too much yet, see how things go.

I really hope the wee one makes a good recovery - my heart goes out to them.
