a double bed for a first bed for a two year old??

Hi there. Just wondering if anyone could give me some advice - I'm pg with baby no 2, and ds will be 23 months when it arrives, in June. He's still in his cot, but we'll need that for the new baby. So I'm thinking we'll need to put him in a bed. We have a spare queen size double bed, and I'm wondering if anyone's put a toddler this young in a double bed, and whether it works, or is it too big...any tips/advice? Or should we just go and buy a little cot bed thing?

Would be very grateful for any help or thoughts, cheers!

I think it would be rather silly to put a 2 year old in a queen size bed.

I have and it worked a treat.

dd1 was 22 months when dd2 arrived but I kept dd1 in her cot for a while (dd2 was in moses then travel cot).

Then I moved dd1 into the spare double that we had - it is a really good bed and when we got our king size (hurrah!) I didn't see why I should get rid of it.

She loves it AND if she is having one of those nights, I can sleep next to her till she settles.

I did a thread on this a while back, will see if I can find it.

If you already have the bed it would be silly not to use it - my friend's small dd has a double bed (her room doubles up as the guest room) and she seems happy with it. I know some people put their kids straight into a double bed - that way they can take it with them when they leave home!

My friend did that and she highly recommends it. Push the bed up into the corner, and then there's more room for rolling and less chance of falling out.

Secondly, when your boy gets ill and wants mummy, you can join him and still get a decent night's sleep.

Finally, when he's a bit older you can always use it as a spare if guests come to stay.

If I had a house big enough, I'd do it!!

ds1 went onto a double futon before he went into a bed -- more room and lower to teh ground

I used a single duvet and surrounded him with pillows to make a kind of nest in the centre of the bed

ds2 didint get this transitional luxury as we'd got rid of the futon by then

The only thing against it is that they get used to the extra size which, IMO, makes them more prone to falling out when in a normal single on holiday etc. DSs have cabin beds which effectively have rails and it was a nightmare going away because they were used to being able to squirm about without falling out. Used to have to fence them in with chairs!

What are your reasons for saying it would be silly, tensing?

My friend did this and it was fine, worked really well. She got some kids double bedding from Vertbaudet but I notice Next do some now too.

I wish I had with dd (now 4. WHen we stay with my parents she sleeps in one fine. At home however she has a smaller than single bed (iyswim) and especially when she is ill its a pita as we can't even lie on it to cuddle her. Plus when she comes into our bed neither of us can move into her room.

I would if we had the bed and the space -- for all the reasons rarrie mentioned.

Glad you started this thread I was having the same dilema as we are moving from a 4 bed house - 3 bed house dd is now 2 & I didn't want to have to buy a new bed for her & get rid of the double - My Mum however thinks that I am daft

Excellent idea. Wish we'd thought of it when moving dd into a bed. What lovely snuggly story times you can have (it isn't half a squeeze getting in with dd to read stories).

We moved DD straight into a double bed from her cot at 2 years (when DS's arrival was a couple of months away). She was absolutely fine and still sleeps in it now, age 4. The only PITA was finding child's double duvet covers but we eventually got a nice one in Next. When we have friends to stay, they get the double bed and she sleeps in a ready bed on our floor. And, yep, when we have episodes of pratting about in the middle of the night, there is room for you to get in too
