URGENT - Fake 'Virus' Email Warning

Snugs · 14/05/2002 11:40

I have just received this warning from the Technical Department of my husbands firm - the first part is from Andy (the tech) and the 2nd part is a copy of the email message that is doing the rounds. Please all be aware and do not get caught out by this:

Dear all,

If you recieve the following e-mail please just IGNORE AND ERASE IT. It is a prank and will result in the deletion of a file which is vital for the running of your PC.
The e-mail itself has no viruses on it incidentally, it just instructs you to do the damage yourself.
Regards, Andy

COPY OF MAIL:
Subject: FW: virus warning

We have just recieved this notification & found the virus in my C: drive
Please check yours
Regards Martin

I have just received a message from one of my contacts to say that their address book has been infected by a virus called jdbgmgr.exe which is
apparently not detected by Norton or Mc Afee.
The virus stays quiet for 14 days before damaging the system.

It is sent automatically by the messenger and by the address book, whether or not you sent e-mails to your contacts.

We found the virus on our C: drive, and deleted it.

These are the instructions.

  1. Go to Start menu; click the Find or Search option
  2. In the files/folder option, write the name jdbgmgr.exe
  3. Be sure you search your C: drive
  4. Click 'find now'.
  5. The virus has a little bear icon with the name jdbgmgr.exe DO NOT OPEN
    IT
  6. Right click it and delete it (it will go to your Recycle bin)
  7. Go to the Recycle bin and delete it there as well, or empty the bin.

IF YOU FIND THE VIRUS CONTACT ALL PEOPLE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK SO THEY CAN ERADICATE IT IN THEIR OWN ADDRESS BOOKS.

Hmmm, apparently this email is a HOAX! I received it yesterday from my friend then a second email from her told me that it wasn't real. It said not to erase the file. Now I'm really confused, maybe its not a hoax - ARGH!!!
Anyone know anything else about it??? Tech, any clues???

DON'T DELETE .EXE FILES FROM YOUR C DRIVE. If you take care with the emails you receive, i.e. don't open those from people you don't know, don't open/save attachments you're not expecting, etc, then you won't go far wrong. Please, PLEASE don't go deleting files, especially those in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM as these are all the ones that run your system & you'll be kn*ckered without them. Take care!

If you reread my original message, it says that the 'virus' email is a hoax (hence the title of this thread) and to ignore it.

THE IMPORTANT THING IS THAT YOU SHOULD NOT FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR REMOVING THE VIRUS.

As elwar says, you should never delete 'exe' files from your computer (unless you are a techno boffin).

I'm sorry if my 1st message confused anyone - I read it over twice before posting and thought it was clear.
