I used to work in Hastings. Be very careful about where you buy (doesn't that sound snobby). Outlying villages such as Westfield, Pett, Fairlight or anywhere along The Ridge is OK. Avoid Ore village. Parts of St Leonards are OK, and some bits of the old town. The houses around Pilot Field (the football ground)Big, fairly new maternity suite at Conquest Hospital. A friend of mine has had three babies in Hastings, one was home birth, and has had a mixed experience with ante and post natal care - but that's probably true of most places. Good primary school is Little Ridge. Jobs are not impossible to find but it is true that Hastings is one of the more economically depressed towns on the South coast, largely due to poor transport links. Improvements to town centre are underway, there is quite a nice shopping centre. Personally I loved working and socialising in Hastings, but I'm glad we didn't live there (difficult to move out). I really hope I haven't upset anyone who lives in Hastings, it's a place I know lots of people really like living in, and it definately needs talking up!

Serena
Hi Pupuce - yes I have lived in Hastings Old Town for nearly 7 years now, having moved over here from a seafront flat in Brighton to a large house (which we already owned and let out) when my husband and I decided to have a child. I can't reccomend the local state schools as my 5 year old goes to Battle Abbey and there are some other good private schools in this area. Shopping is not good - I always go to Tunbridge Wells (hi Pupuce) or Brighton for clothes, etc. However, I love living near the sea, there are beautiful cliff walks here and the area is relatively unspoilt (the lack of investment in the past few decades has its advantages). My husband still works over Brighton way as it would be difficult to find a very well-paid job locally, but lots of people we know commute to London. rail links are to Charing Cross,Waterloo,London Bridge. Basically I would say there is an old-fashioned feel around these parts, we are near to the Kent border with the Romney Marsh etc. So be prepared to step back in time.......!!
