Can't get car insurance for Ds, 18, any suggestions?

Hi,
DS, 18, passed his driving test today and I want to insure him to drive my car for a month or so until he goes off to uni, (hopefully, roll on results day)

However, depending on which insurance company I talk to:

he is too young,

he hasn't had his driving licence long enough

Zafira (1.6 engine) - is too powerful , and he is too young,

they only do 12 month policies etc.

Even the company who insured him for a month whilst he was learning won't insure him.

I'm at my wits end. Any suggestions?

Try Adrian flux - when I was young and drove various hot hatches / modified cars they were always the cheapest and I think they do short term policies.

Otherwise add him to your insurance and then just take him off in a month. With my insurers that would cost me 2x admin charges of £25 and a ( temporary) increase in my premium for a month. Not sure if all insurers work the same way though.

Or google " under 21 day insurance" despite the name they will offer short term insurance of up to a month. Good luck!

Thanks for your suggestions Petallic. It was Adrian Flux who insured him as a learner but won't now do short term. My insurance company (Red Phone) won 't insure for a Zafira 1.6 until he's 19 and had his licence for a year. I'll try googling the under 21 day and see if that helps.

It's feels like the situation is almost forcing us to get him a car as that's the only way he'll be able to drive :( but we can't afford that, and he doesn't need one,

Oh dear, it's a shame AF can't help - your son can't be the only one in his position of wanting short term insurance. Good luck with your googling!

Try this company we are marmalde
www.wearemarmalade.co.uk/ask-us/learner-insurance-faq
I use it for eldest daughter who is currently learning and it's worked out well for us

Flexible policy lengths

thanks to you all for your suggestions. We ended up cancelling our current insurance with direct line and changing to Aviva, who will include DS as an additional driver and when he goes to uni ( hopefully, 2 more days til results day), we can take him off the insurance, and pay less than with Direct Line. Then when Ds comes back for the holidays we can put him back on temporarily

I don't know how many hours we've spent on the phone and internet over the past few days, but now I feel the need to go and lie down in a darkened room
