Advice for buying a bike

I am about to buy a bike for the first time in years. Would you like to give me your top tip please?
I live in quite a hilly area, will cycle mainly on cycle paths, sometimes on the road, sometimes on slightly rougher ground, usually short distances but a bit longer when on holiday. I'm not totally unfit but certainly not very fit. I have an 11 month old baby who will need to come on the bike with me ( I'm thinking of a seat on the back).
Finally any thoughts on the brand Marin?

Hi there, having had a road bike and a mountain bike, I have settled on a decent hybrid. If you live in a hilly area, you need gears. 21 gears definitely. Marin is a good brand, but their are lots out there. I have a Raleigh Dutch style hybrid bike at the moment and I always assumed that Raleigh wasn't as great as some, but it is actually turning our pretty fab - especially since I added suspension. You'll want suspension if you are not always on the road. I live in a city and got it as the tow paths were rough in parts and it made all the difference. I would advise you to always read the reviews.
In regards to your 11mo, I would strongly recommend a WeeRide, you'll have to google it as I can't figure out how to link on my phone. The seat sits between your knees and only affects riding position nominally. I have had rear mounted child seats and hated them. I could not see my DS and they put weight on the back that exaggerated any wobbles meaning I felt terrified constantly of slipping and losing control of the rear.
Be inspired by the Dutch, a lot ride more than walk with kids too, and have nailed it design wise.
