need to move ...but where????

My husband and I have an 8 month old LG and currently live in dagenham. We want to move as its not a very nice area and our house is too small. Were not in a massive rush now to move but kind of have a time scale of 3 years as i dont want her going to school locally. However i am nervous about making a move and it being all wrong! We have our friends and family all local so dont really wanna move too far. We have been loking at Colchester in Essex but not sure what parts r nice? I would love some advice for hunting out good schools and surrounding areas.
