Just for a bit of light relief - I was sitting in my usual semi - comatose state yesterday evening, staring blankly at the TV, adverts washing over me, when I began to wander which adverts get on other peoples nerves? Which drive you potty every time you hear/see them? I know this is a bit banal, but it's about my level......
For starters, the 'best' have to be daytime TV ads - in particular - "Wahey, just call us the Fybogel Family...."
Any more for any more?.......

Oh Leese you have no idea how much that advert gets on my nerves!

Another one is the fiat stilo ad, where they all get in and start clicking and clunking things in rhythmn - aarrgh! All the debt management ones, the singing halifax ads, car finance ads, they would all go into room 101 for me, never to be seen again.

Now you have me started I'll have to go and make a list!

The Direct Line ones, the diarrhoa ones, the one for the sore nose (Happy Nose?), the BT one with 'Manhatten' and the list could go on but of course I can't think of them at the minute. One the other hand I like the car one where she says no to the guy's marriage proposal, the music in the car one that zoom zoom zoom and the Standard Life one where the baby girl says she's not getting married but will just take the money!

Oh Leese. Havnet got an advert to add at the moment, but Im sure I will in time! But just had to agree with you on the Fybogel ad. That woman annoys me SO much! My daughter even says bad lady when the ad is on and that's not good is it?

OK, now you've all made me laugh, my favourite at the moment is the one which offers me the chance to find Poodle in my Pot Noodle!! I love the way it makes fun of all those awful claim/compensation ads. When it was first aired, and they gave that mock scenario - Mr Smith got £50,000 for falling over his shoelaces, dh thought it was serious!! He was so put out at the 'state of society', that he missed the punchline.....come to think of it, I never corrected him......

Find a poodle in your Pot Noodle? Hmm. Does the ad say you're supposed to pay for it first? We keep finding them with the lids poked in all over our supermarket...

I agree with Sobernow, the Levis ad is excellent. Another good one is the ad for the x-box, where the woman gives birth ,the baby shoots out then flies across the sky and ends up as an old man.

Well there are loads that drive me mad. I have to turn the NSPCC ads over though as they are far to grafic for me. My favourite has to be the bonjela add - its only shown infrequently, and late at night but its sooo funny. tell me there is someone else out there thats seen it.

The latest NSPCC ad, with the cartoon child on, makes me feel decidly uncomfortable and as with many ads that make me feel this way (appeals for 2 quid a month to help the starving or suffering) I find myself turning over channels.

The message may be memorable but it doesn't make me any more likely to donate to their cause. In fact, I object to the emotional blackmail.

I hate the 'No win, no fee' ads, the cheap loans aimed at people who can't afford to borrow more money, etc.

I also hate Tena Lady (or whatever the incontinence things are called). This makes it acceptable for women in their 30's to be incontinent - surely this is dealing with symptoms not cause?

TBH, I don't watch very much TV except on my infrequent trips to the gym so finding ads I enjoy is even more difficult!

Loads get on my nerves but they are all doing their job as you have all mentioned them tons of times.

But it's the type of advert that's annoying - the branding doesn't necessarily stick, Joe1.

Same as I love some of the car ads - the music is great but I have no idea which song goes with which make/model. I used to like the Peugeout 'Nice car' ad but it wouldn't make me buy their brand, I'm afraid.

There's an awful car ad where an "inspirational" teacher is telling her students 'wherever you are, whatever you do I'll be watching over you'. If I tried that on my students they'd be falling over laughing by the time I got to the end of the sentence. As for the NSPCC ads, they use the music (Siegur Ros) that I walked down the aisle to at my wedding. Totally destroys it for me. And as for the fybogel family, I could happily drown them in their disgusting orange muck.

I could go on, but I feel a rant coming on.

Lill, is that the ad with the guy making the hysterical face about his mouth ulcer? I agree, it is the funniest ad I have ever seen and NONE of my friends or family have seen it EXCEPT ME - gahh!

The best one recently has to be the Benylin ad where the husband comes home followed by about 8 'grim reapers' and knowing suburban wifelet says " ah, you've got a cold then?".
Makes me laugh out loud it's so insightful into the way men behave when they're ill - it must have been written by a female copywriter!

I loathe all car adverts with their 'meaningful' music and lifestyle choice message. Urghhh! But recently I saw an ad for a video by the Moonies on Channel 5... that was bizarre!

On the rare occasion I manage to watch Countdown, the ads. consist of June Whitfield asking if we've put enough aside for our funerals, baths that we can walk in and out of and Stannah stairlifts Oh and electrically operated beds. I feel like I should be in a care home every time I watch it! R

leese · 11/03/2002 18:44

LOL Rhiannon! Imagine stepping into your bath, then sitting there whilst it filled up. I always think, by the time its full, you'd be ready to get out! I do think Thora Hird looks remarkably sprightly in her yellow sandals and American tan tights on that electric bed advert tho'. Anyway, we're all in denial as we all know we're part of one big fybogel family!!

I cannot ABIDE the Fybogel family an absolute appallng waste of advertisers money as I would now rather have constipation than use thier product, and have you noticed the Dad making a model aeroplane - sorry, is it 1953?

I think adverts have gone down the pan recently, although as mentioned the Benylin advert is hilarious.

I like the Bacardi cat too and the dog that tells jokes at the piano (is it for vodka?)

And what about the new OXO family? Ugh they just make me want to vomit. Where the hell do they get these people from? Oh they're supposed to be soooo modern, talking about Baby Spice and a**e-lickers (or whatever she calls the boyfriend). I hate them...!

Hmmmm... this seems a good time/thread for me to mention the fact that I have a 'guess which advert' quiz up my virtual sleeve - much in the same vain as song lyrics. Now I know that you are all probably sick to death with them all, so I'll ask politely first... (its dead good though!!!)

My worst has to be the one that had all the breathing on it ?! Do you remember it from last year - can't remember what it was for (bank or internet site or something?) but it just had pictures of the tide going in and out and other images all in time to someone's breathing. Everythime I saw it I thought I was going to hyper-ventilate because though I was just breathing normally but the advert made me want to breathe in time to it - most infuriating - and I had to switch it off as I'd do it everytime and confuse my lungs (please say someone else remembers and I'm not just cracking up?!!)

But Fybogel family IS the worst!

I think the Fybrogel family is related to the Senocot woman, who in turn is the mother of the Imbodium woman. She, incidentally, is the mother of boy in the Andrex adverts and the little girl who drinks Yakult and talks to 'happy bacteria' in her tummy.

Blimey - are there really that many adverts dedicated to bowel movements?!
