MN Fearful Flyers, a new thread for us

I know there are a few here who aren't the world's greatest flyers, so thought we could have a nice thread to chat, offer advice, share experiences and things that worked for us, things to avoid etc.

The thread in Chat about turbulence made me think about my trip to Prague in september, and how, I was a nervous wreck (didn't tell my mum that though) about the flight home, as we had nothing to do on the last day but sit around the hotel, occasionally going for a walk. We flew back on September 11th, and as we were boarding, all the lights in the jetbridge went off, then we flew over a thunderstorm, and hit horrible, stomach dropping, turbulence. Yeah, my brain wasn't thrilled about all of the above!

But, I did better than on my flight back from Cyprus in 2011, I didn't cry or grab my mum's hand, as I did when flying back with my mate, so that's progress, right?

Flying in a couple of 4 and 2 seater planes between the Cyprus trip and Prague trip helped, I think.

I hate flying,I can only cope with plenty of vodka!

We're going to Spain next summer and I'm shitting myself as we've booked with Monarch Airlines and they use crappy old planes from different countries during peak times (remember the one that skidded off the runway at Birmingham airport last year?)

Last year on holiday I got chatting to a lady who had flown there with Monarch, on a Lithuanian plane, I think she said. The got halfway and had to do an emergency landing in France after the plane dropped really quickly.

I'm going to my GP this time, do you think he'll let me have something if I explain how nervous I am? I got a few funny looks drinking vodka shots at 6am last year!!

I'll join you! I never used to be scared, but since having the dcs it's a different story! The way I cope is just to give over to the hopelessness - I can't do anything/ change anything, so I might as well not worry Confused

Sausage, your GP should prescribe you something, as long as there's no medical reason that you can't take things like that. You could also try things like Rescue Remedy, unless you've tried that before?

For me, it's the lack of knowledge about WHO exactly is piloting this metal tube that is somehow zooming through the sky... Who are you, and why should I entrust my life to you?!
