I'm starting work at one tomorrow and really really nervous (didn't sleep lst night and have come out in a nervous rash)

I'll be the cook, does anyone have any tips etc?

Hey Radley,
I have 6 yrs experience working in nurseries. Recently left childcare to do call centre work.

Nurseries can be incredibly bitchy places. Don't get involved with the staff slagging each other off and don't encourage it.

Get to know some of the parents if you can. They make the job more fun and more personal.

I don't know if you will be interacting with any of the children but just understand that being away from home all day is hard for them, don't get angry with them if they get whingy (seen many of my colleagues do this when all the child was, was tired and wanted to be home with mum or dad). The word 'naughty' isn't allowed in nurseries, nor is the word 'gun' as in the nursery rhyme 'run rabbit run rabbit'.

If there are set menu's and recipes already there ask if you can implement your own to make the job interesting and varied for you.

I hope you enjoy it and good luck! I'm sure you will be brill at it!

Thanks alot for that.

I don't do the backstabbing and bitching stuff, never have done, i would rather say what i think to their faces.

I will be doing the menu on a 5 week rotation with the occasional 'world' day thrown in.

I may occasionally be interacting with the children to cover the other staff's breaks.

Just to completely go off on a tangent, not allowing the word 'gun' is PC nonsense gone totally out of proportion, IMVHO.

Again - off in a tangent here, but what makes someone voluntarily work in a call centre? I survived all of 48 hours before I quit - it was hell on earth - the satanic mill of my worst nightmares. I was so desperate to leave that I told the company not to bother paying the 2 days I worked there and not to bother with the P45. Were the 6 years at the nurseries you worked at really that bad?

I have worked in both a nursery and a call centre.

Both places full of females, both places full of bitches.

You will be Radley you are not in any competition with anyone over jobs and its usually the younger girls who start a lot of the bitching etc.
