nursery sleep problem

DD is 9 months old. At home she has a 45min nap at 10am and a 1hr45min nap at 1pm. She's been at nursey since 6 months and has usually slept a decent amount of time there. Now, they're getting lots more babies and they've started to use the playroom for naps aswell as the cot room. This means that they're doing lunch at 11ish and then putting them all down to sleep together. I've agreed to this as they've said she's started to fight going down at 10, however, I don't think she's old enough at 9 months to drop the morning nap.
My questions are:

  1. Is she old enough to get by with this sleep arrangement? Will it matter in the long run, as it's only months till she drops the first nap.
  2. Should I ask the nursery to try to replicate the home routine? The problem with this beoing that she'll have to sleep in a noisy room?

Cheers
Dawnx

hi Puffling, I agree with you that your DD might not be ready to drop her morning nap. You might have a v. overtired DD on your hands. DS didn't drop his morning nap until he was 18 months, and had a similar routine to your DD. Also, I don't think it's fair to expect the babies to all sleep together in the playroom rather than in a calmer atmosphere in a sleep room with cots.

Slightly different note, but are you happy with them having lots more babies? Presumably they are getting more staff to cope? Isn't it going to be rather crowded?

I would expect a nursery to try as far as possible to stick to the routine you have at home, if that's what you request. Maybe see how it goes for a couple of weeks, but if DD isn't coping well, then you need to speak to them.

Good luck, hope it goes all right...

Thanks for your advice Clairemow.I forgot to add, that she's not sleeing very long ar lunch. I think she thinks it's her morning nap. Today she only dod 30 mins or less and then fell, asleep after her 3 pm feed for 30 mins.

Thanks for that information Nurseyjo. I'll discuss it with them tomorrow.

I'm a nursery owner. We have a sleep room for all under two's who need to nap, at whatever time of day.

We do try to fit in all the personal routines of the children but sometimes it is difficult, as we are in a similar situation; short staffed, over subscribed etc. I agree that a 9 month old should still be sleeping in the morning or whenever suits them in preference to the nursery 'lumping' them all in together at the same time (usually after lunch).

Nurseyjo - I was under the impression that BTTM was not a legal requirement, unlike the FS. I think it came about through recommendations rather than legislation. Is this right? Is it a legal requirement? I'm not arguing with what you are saying, but as a baby unit leader, who is desperately trying to implement BTTM, I would rather know if it is law or not. Thanks!

I spoke to the nursery today and they've tried to do a morning and lunch nap. The cot room is now another play room, so she would only get a quiet sleep if she went down for a sleep with the other kids after lunch. I think I'd still rather they tried a morning nap though.

Are nurserys required to have a room set aside for sleep? If not, I think they should be.
