Nurseries

Is this just a phase or should we change nursery?

DD is 2.5 and has been going to nursery 3 days a week since she was 1. Initially she cried a lot but then settled nicely and actually went in quite happily, a quick "bye mummy" in the morning and that was it.

However, she has been going to a new nursery for about 8 months now because we moved house, and things have never been quite as good there. She seemed ok for a while though she was never as keen to go as with the old place, but since she moved up to the toddler room 4 months ago drop-offs have become increasingly hard.

Every morning she says "no nursery today?" in a hopeful voice, and says she doesn't want to go. Usually when we pick her up she's in good spirits and comes running over all smiley, but she's also very clingy and uncharacteristically affectionate.

I don't know whether this is just a phase or whether she is genuinely unhappy at this particular nursery? There aren't really any suitable alternative nurseries close by, but equally I don't want to keep her there if it makes her unhappy.

Any advice greatly appreciated!

We've had the same experience with our DS. Drop offs were never great but became horrendous around the 2.5year mark. Every morning started with a 'it's not a nursery day is it?' And then progressed to hysteria. But it all suddenly stopped when he got to 3. Our nursery was really helpful in the meantime as he was so distressed - they ended up giving him one to one time at drop off with a member of staff taking him to a quiet room with a book which helped a bit. I haven't worked out what made the difference to him but it just passed. So hopefully a phase for you. Grim start to everyone's day though. Good luck

Thanks Kittyhaha, that's reassuring to hear! Fingers crossed it will be just a phase for DD as well then.

And I think I'll talk to the nursery to see if there's anything they can do to reassure us and help make drop-offs easier for DD.
