Manual Vacuum Aspiration under local anesthesia for missed miscarriage

After finding out at 10 weeks 3 days my baby had no heartbeat I was left devastated. The fetus had grown to 9 weeks 2 days and deep down before I went to my u/s I knew there was something wrong as my symptoms of sickness and tiredness dissappeared to the day the baby stopped growing.

I was given several options after finding out and after a long week of waiting to see if things progressed naturally I opted for the vacuum aspiration under local anesthesia which I was told is an uncommon choice. I wanted to post this to reassure anyone under the same circumstances as I found it difficult to get an honest opinion on the procedure.

Firstly if you want a procedure with no pain this is not the option for you. My consultant told me ladies weigh up the pain as follows medical management 7/10 surgical management local 5or6/10 and surginal management general anaesthetic 2/10. So the least painful is to go under general anaesthetic but with that comes a longer time in hospital.

I arrived at hospital at 12 I had my bloods taken and was given 1500mg paracetamol 600my Ibupropen and an anti sickness tablet all to be taken at once at 1. This scared me as it looked like a lot but I was fine. I returned back at 1.45 and the nurse took me into the room I was very nervous she asked me to put on a gown with my top left on and I waited fir the consultatant. My bloods came back and I was told I was rhesus negative which I knew but they had to check which would mean an anti d injection at the end of the procedure. The consultant had me sign some disclaimer forms and ask how you want the pregnancy to be process after the procedure you are allowed to take it home. He then told me it would be painful and described what I said above I was adamant I wanted it doing this way and although nervous I sat on the bed with legs in stirups. He moved the bed up so my xxx was in eye view! I would like to note my partner was in with me the whole time holding my hand throughout and the consultant and nurse had no problem with this.

He started by numbing my cervix this in my opinion wad not painful was like a sharp short scratch and nothing to worry about. He left me abour 2 minutes then he put in a clamp that you have when having a smear test. After that there was approximately 3-5 minutes of pain I would definitely say 6/10 its a hard pain to explain but he was effectively manually scraping the uterus and I felt the contractions it was like severe period cramps i was given gas and air at this time he then took the suction tube and took the contents that did not hurt it was a massive relief. I did see alot of blood but he said it went well.

He then went away to check he had everything I was a little emotional. He then came back and told me the sac was 11 weeks well this freaked me and my partner out but he explained the sachad kept growing but the fetus had started to demise so was definitely a non viable pregnancy.

I felt relieved and sat up there wasn't any immediate pain I put my trousers on and a massive pad. Afterwards he discussed any concerns I had said everything looked normal and it was just chance miscarriage which hurts as this was our first attempt. He advised you can start again 1 month or after your first period if you feel well. I was prescribed antibiotics and had my anti d injection and was allowed to leave.

Half way home I looked at the clock and it was 3.20 I couldn't believe that had all been done in just ober an hour.

I spent the night in quite a lot of pain and cramping as the cocktail of local anesthesia and drugs wore off but next day was like a period pain.

For those of you looking to do this procedure I would recommend it but its not for the squeamish. If I had another miscarriage I would pick this procedure again. Consultant, nurse and hospital were amazing.

I don't have to go back for a check up as long as I heal ok and am thinking about when to start trying again. Hopefully next time will be our time :-)
