Mumsnet surveys

NOW CLOSED....Pre-teen/ teen aged 10-17 who wears specs or contacts? You could win one of 2 £250 vouchers by together completing a survey about options for vision correction

We have been asked to conduct a survey to find out parents and childrens' attitudes and perceptions about different vision correction options. Please be aware the questions for your child do discuss various aspects of children wearing contacts.

The survey is open to all UK MNers who have at least one child aged 10-17 years who currently requires some sort of vision correction such as glasses or contact lenses. We have lots of responses from children aged 12 and under and would ideally like to get more from those aged 13+ now, though all welcome...

This survey has two main pages of questions: one for parents and one for your child.

Please ensure your child is nearby when you start this survey as you'll need them to add their responses to the last page - if your child is not with you now please bookmark this thread or the survey link and complete it when you are together. If necessary you can leave the survey open which should save your responses but it would work best if your child is there and able to do the survey after you've answered your questions. There are 20 questions for you and 10 for your child.

We're looking for around 500 parents and 500 children to complete this survey. As a special incentive we have £250 of vouchers to be won by TWO lucky MN families. The two winners - drawn at random from everyone adding their details - can choose from John Lewis or iTunes vouchers to the value of £250 - and we're leaving it up to you how you negotiate with your child over how (if at all) the £250 is split between you Wink should you win....

Here's the survey: www.surveymonkey.com/s/VVKJVPG

Many thanks
MNHQ
PS Please note this survey has been sent to a sample from our panel. Please only complete it once per family.

My DD found some of the questions a bit odd as she only wears her glasses for long distance and doesn't wear them all day. She put a lot of 'don't know's. hope it's ok.

Done. It was very revealing as we did it together (DD is 11 so wanted help). I put that she didn't want contacts as she had never mentioned them but she put that she was really keen to have them. I suppose if she manages to get up early to do her hair every day she is probably capable of using contacts properly.

Food for thought, I told her we'll ask at her next check up.

DS just collected his new specs today. With free prescription sunglasses.

Both done it. Finally gave in and DD1 wears contacts for social occasions. Well that was the initial agreement anyhow. Now wears them for school too even though she doesn't see as well with them. Has also had 2 lots of conjunctivitis through lousy hygiene (has been known to ferret around in eyes in the middle of the street.) She still feels she's responsible enough to wear them though. Am regretting having given in on this though.

Done it, but like Don'tSHOUTTTTTT some of the questions seemed to presume dd wears them full time, but she only needs them for 'concentrated close work' (ie, more than 10 mins of reading, writing, computer) so it doesn't affect her sport, which she does a lot of. The survey didn't seem to take that into account and also seemed to be trying to 'sell' contact lenses.

Done, but similarly re wearing them all the time. DS only needs his for concentrated close work as well. He had never even thought of contactsd and as a 10 year old boy cares not a jot about his appearance or what his friends think of him..yet. I think it's probably more geared towards older teens and did seem to be pushing the idea of contact lenses and suggesting that glasses make you more self conscious.

DD2 and I have completed it. She was very put out that we completed it 2 days before her birthday, so she had to say she was 13.

glasses are very cool at the moment, dd (12) has a pair Jack Duckworth would have been proud of but she informs me the style is 'geek chic' Grin

The questions seem biased towards those who wear glases OR contacts and to those who wear both the questions seem a little irrelevant

Filled in for DD 11

Then read only one per family. Sad as DS2 16 also wears them.

Report
muddysamazingyoni · 20/04/2013 21:35

DDs friend wears contacts and has had nothing but problems, so DD is a little scared of them.

More open Qs would be better to get an overview of what DC think, in their own words.
