Mumsnetters and their children needed to test NutraSea omega-3 fish oil

We've been asked by NutraSea to find 50 Mumsnetters who are willing for their child to try a new omega-3 liquid fish oil called NutraSea Kids.

To take part in the trial your children need to be aged between 2-16 and either an existing user of omega-3 liquid fish oils or to have tried them in the past and not liked the taste.

If you're selected to take part, NutraSea will send you a bottle each of NutraSea+D and NutraSea Kids and we will email you a link to a thread on Mumsnet for your feedback.

The trial will last three months and you will need to add feedback three times: after two weeks, after one month and then after the oil is finished at the end of the three months.

Your two-week feedback should mainly concentrate on your reaction to the taste of the pure oil compared to your existing omega-3 liquid fish oil supplement or the ones you have tried in the past.

Your feedback after one month and at the end of the three months should concentrate on the health benefits you have noticed (if any) or the difference (if any) the product has made to your/your child's health.

Everyone who adds three lots of feedback will be sent a £10 Holland and Barrett gift voucher and entered into a prize draw to win a £100 ASOS gift voucher.

At the recommended dose, NutraSea and NutraSea+D are safe to consume during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, but if you're pregnant or taking any medication please consult your doctor before taking the supplements.

dh takes capsules of the stuff. I recently thought of trying it because my skin and hair could do with it and I suffer from a bunion that is now getting arthiritis. I can't swallow capsules so I'm taking the liquid stuff.

I never thought it would taste quite as bad as it does!

The kids have tried and have nearly gagged. But I would much rather they took it in pure liquid form than those tablets that have everything else shoved in them. I'm not a great believer in vitamin tabs for children, but I know they don't get to eat enough oily fish and the benefits are huge.

Our kids have tried a few in their time.
Point blanc refused the Boots strawberry one after a first taste.
The Eye Q Citris one is the only one they will cosnider!

We tried omega 3 oil and capsules a while ago as we were sceptical about all the hype around fish oils improving children's intelligence but wanted to see if it made any difference.
Due to the disgusting taste they only took it for about 3 months before we gave up.

How are parents supposed to judge whether the fish oil has improved their child's health, or whether it would have improved anyway? Surely only a double blind (or at least single blind) trial is the only way to get data of any possible scientific value?

Or is the snake fish oil manufacturer simply after quotes to use in its advertising?

Meg, I think that the feedback is going to focus on the taste of the supplements, rather than any impact on health. And this stuff is already available.

OK, both DSs and DH & I had it this morning

(Kids one for DSs, adult one for DH & I)

DS2 didn't like it - "too oiley" "not enough flavour" & says he prefers the citris EyE Q one he normally has.

DS1 said it was OK, and he'd be willing to keep taking it, but agreed you could barely taste the flavour.

DH & I foudn the apple adult one inoffensive. Quite a strong early 'fish' taste, but then that gave way to a light oiley taste. Could hardly detect the apple at all. However interestingly, one of the things we all dislike about fish oils is that if you burp slightly throughout the day, the taste comes back. I find I am having delicate (not unpleasant!) apple burps today!!
