I haven't had my vouchers yet but I'm very pleased to be chosen!

I've had a browse of the website and plan to make Oat and chickpea dumplings

Blueberry and oat muffins

and try out some of the dressings with the cold-pressed oil.

I'm looking forward to this challenge, as are the rest of the family. As I said on the other related thread, last week's Stella Magazine in the Daily Telegraph on Saturday had some seriously scrummy recipes using rapeseed oil....

DW went out and bought the two varieties (the cold-pressed variety being considerably more expensive than the 'vegetable oil' one!) today so we are ready to roll....

Oat and chickpea dumplings sound scrummy and much healthier than the suet variety!!

I switched to Rapeseed oil around 6 months ago after reading about it's health benefits and I'm now wondering why we ever bothered with pricey olive oil - I've used it for all my cooking and for salad dressing (the cold pressed version) and no-one has noticed any difference!

I've just started using Rapeseed Oil as its produced by Broighter a local farm near where I live and I'm committed to buying local. So far I've only gone as far as drizzling their delicious chilli infused oil on salads but looking forward to using it in all my cooking after realising how good it is for you!

I received my voucher yesterday. I won't be able to try any rapeseed oil until the week after next though, as we're visiting the PILs and then going on holiday to Disneyland Paris. I'll report back when I'm home.

I've got my voucher and tried out the standard rapeseed oil last night. Will update as I try out new dishes, but here is the first review:

Meal one (using standard rapeseed oil - so much cheaper than olive oil!):
Home made spicy potato wedges with falafel.
To keep meals as healthy as possible, even when having treats like potato wedges, I like to oven cook as opposed to shallow or deep fry.
I made home made wedges using peeled white potatoes, generously sprinkled with cayenne pepper and paprika, and laid out in a shallow roasting tin, then drizzled them with standard rapeseed oil.
I had previously cooked and frozen the falafel, so popped them, frozen, in with the wedges.
The children especially loved this meal. The wedges were really crispy and light, and cooked evenly and well. I would usually not feel like I was cooking ?properly? without using olive oil, but these were so, so tasty. Already my preconceptions of olive oil are being somewhat challenged. I have always (well in my grown up years anyway) just used vegetable oil/rapeseed oil when doing incredibly basic cooking, like for fried eggs, omelettes or pancakes, and used olive oil when dealing with what I deem to be proper meals/ingredients.
It will be interesting to see how the rapeseed oil fares when used in making a salad dressing, stir fry, and roast potatoes, together with some of the recipe ideas from the booklet I received.

I received my voucher yesterday, thank you.

It looks like I've been doing the rapeseed oil challenge for a couple of years now without knowing. I often use vegetable oil in baking instead of butter. I hadn't realised it was rapeseed oil though.

I've just made some tabouleh to go with tonight's BBQ. I used the cold pressed oil instead of my normal extra virgin olive oil. It seems to have a lighter, milder taste than olive oil. But, I think it goes well and works in this dish.

I haven't looked at the recipes on the website yet. I'll do so next week. I have to say though that none of the ones in the booklet excited me too much.

I have tried rapeseed (actually M+S's vegetable oil used to be rapeseed) for dressings and found it 'greasy' tasting (yes I know that sounds stupid!).

I usually use olive oil (which I love) that costs a forture, so hopefully the bottle of rapeseed oil I bought today will taste as good. I wonder if muffins and popcorn will taste good with it? That's all I know how to bake with oil (apart from a teensy bit in bread).

Hi
bought my two bottles of oil today - the cold pressed was more than double the price of the other bottle.
We have had a BBQ this evening as it was a little cooler and used the cold pressed oil for the salad dressing. I made the one of the website - The Oriental Salad Dressing, which was very nice and I had all the ingredients already in my cupboards.
I tried a little before it went into the dressing and found it was a lot less heavy as my usual olive oil, and had a slightly nutty taste.
We all liked it. :)

My post arrived late on Saturday, by which time I'd been to Sainsbo's so it will probably be Wednesday befor I get the oil, but I found I've already got 1/2 a bottle of cold pressed which I can't of liked muchor it wouldn't still be hanging around.
Cant help thinking about the heavy use of slug pellets in rape tho, is there an organic version?.

Report
Theimpossiblegirl · 21/07/2013 13:28

Started early too. Got the oils yesterday- the vegetable oil was comparatively cheap and the cold pressed was cheaper than olive oil so a good start. I spent £4.75 so thank you for the bottle of wine too.
:)

I used some of the cold pressed on our new potatoes with chives last night- it was fine, tasted nice and felt healthier than butter. I preferred it to olive oil as I can't afford the expensive stuff right now and cheap olive oil has a slight tang to it (I find).

Being in the South-west means that the oil is a local product too, which I like.

Tesco do an organic version btw.
