This thread is for the 100 MNers who have been trying out the new school uniform range from F&F.

Here's what they say about the range: "At F&F we're really proud of the value and quality of our products and have spent the last year really improving our schoolwear range. Our schoolwear offering, which is available online all year round, is designed to last. With features including Teflon® fabric protector across skirts, trousers and pinafores, we believe that we've made it easier to get those stains out. Picking my order up tonight, ds will be testing it tomorrow!

First day of wearing shorts, short-sleeved shirts and socks. All have been washed yesterday evening and this morning.

Shorts were fine, but I'm glad I ordered the smaller of the sizes I was dithering over or they'd have been like something from It Ain't Half Hot, Mum! There is a polyester sheen to the fabric which I'm not keen on, it gives them a cheap look which I haven't found in the shorts they've worn previously (M&S cheap polyester jobs!).

Shirts were also fine, although thinner and rougher than their other shirts (M&S easy iron). Good value for money though as they are cheaper than the last M&S ones I bought.

Socks are excellent and don't seem to have shrunk up in the wash, so I didn't have to stretch them back into shape as I have with their usual school socks.

We bought trousers, sweatshirts, polo tops, shirts, and v necked jumpers. I cant remember the exact cost - around £75 worth.

The sweatshirts are thinner than I expected, but they seem fine so far - they might be a bit shivery in outdoor PE once it gets colder though?

The trousers seem good quality, but tbh, they haven't tried them out because the sizing is HUGE, so I will have to keep them for the Sept 2014!!! The leg length was waaay over! I did see a slightly more 'trendy' lookinf pair of trousers (cant remember what they were called), but they didn't have them in ds's size, so he had to settle for normal ones. He likes to push the unifrom boundaries, & be a bit stylish whilst technically being within the rules!

The polo shirts are great value; we got some of the two-packs, and also a Value one (to take the total over £100! ). The latter is fab for 75p!

The v neck jumpers are also fine so far; they haven't shrunk exactly,but have definitely gone a bit stiffer since washing, as if the stitching has tightened up whilst remaining the same size (if that makes sense).

I have no idea if this stuff will last as long as other makes, but I suspect so. Everything is pretty like for like these days. We usually get Asda as its cheap, but have some M&S hand me downs that have lasted 3 kids! Shirts, though, don't need to wear well because they get covered in marker pen (thank you school for letting them have those...) and nothing will get it out, so they get thrown away for that reason before they have time to wear out.

Like I mentioned on the other thread, i really wish Tescos had a plain black school coat - that two tone one would be a no no for our school.

Q4 To be honest I need to use it more & wash it more before giving more detailed feedback . I expect longevity in good quality school uniform so a study such as this that asks for feedback after a week is a bit short sighted in my opinion

I bought 2 x pinafore, 2 x summer dress and 2 x socks and 2 x polo shirts. The total cost was around £30 so far and I will be purchasing more items for September. The items are very good value for money

I thought that the quality was good, thick material, well sewn seams etc. The summer dresses came with a scruncy hairband which my daughter loves

DD came home from school covered in yellow and green paint. Sadly these stains have not washed out, so I think I need to use a Stain Devil on them. The pinafores have washed well, so I think the Teflon coating has worked well on them if they have it

My daughter is aged 5. She is not overweight, but is quite tall, broad across the back and chunky in her arms and legs. I had previously bought age 5-6 dresses for her, but these were too short and struggled to get them over her head. I decided to buy age 7-8 summer dresses. These were a perfect knee length on her, however she really struggles to get her arm into the second sleeve. These dresses had a zip, but the problem is the same with buttons

It would be good if the zip/buttons could start slightly further down the dress, so that it is easier to put on. She screams every morning when trying to get her second arm in and for that reason, the dresses with buttons right down the whole dress are easier to wear, but the ones with half zips look much smarter and are easier for DD to dress herself

*She also had to have a bigger size in pinafores, for the length as I dont like sending her to school in a dress that barely covers her bottom!"

The socks are fantastic, white with a blue check frill/line/bow around the top. 5 pairs for £4 and they match the school uniform perfectly and come in two shades of blue which is great as we have bought dresses in both shades.

Q5 Finally, if it came up in conversation would you recommend F&F schoolwear range to friends or family? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would definitely recommend the school uniform, although I would recommend to friends that they buy a size bigger than they think they will need. It is all very cheap and from past experience with polo shirts etc, they wash and wear repeatedly, very very well.

Tesco Clubcard vouchers can be used and when they are on double up exchange, it makes life very easy and cheap for parents who may not have a lot of money

The little touches like matching socks, hairbands etc are excellent and DD goes off to school each day looking very smart

For my 5 year old DS I bought 6 polo shirts, 3 pairs grey pleat-front trousers, PE kit (2 navy shorts, 2 white T shirt and plimsolls), and some socks and pants. His school has logo jumpers and doesn't wear regular shirts, so this is a full rig, and came to about £50, which seems pretty good value to me - though as CaptainSweatPants says above, even with a very prompt order, this only gives us a week to try them out, so can't comment on how well anything stands up to repeated wearing and washing.

Q2 Did the overall quality of the school uniforms match your expectations? If so, how? If not, why not?

Everything looks acceptable. The polo shirt we've worn so far does the job, although if I was being very picky I'd say that the very tips of the collar could be better finished - slight fraying/loose thread effect right out of the packet.
The grey trousers are slightly darker than expected (darker than this years' M&S budget range ones), but they'll be fine. I was very pleased that they were available in shorter leg length - although I will still have to shorten them I think. The cut is high quality - deep pockets, proper button pocket at the back, zip fly properly aligned.
I was a bit surprised by the PE shorts - they're shiny and slippery and quite thin - football style - though if I'd noticed they were 100% polyester I would probably have guessed this. I would have liked to see an option of shorts in a thicker cotton.
The hugest hit from my son's point of view was the black socks with multicoloured days of the weeks on the sole.

Can't comment yet as trousers have not been washed. I will come back to the thread if I have anything to add on this point in the next few days! They look thinner and shinier than standard trousers - time will tell.

Keep the various leg length on the trousers. Or better still, sell trousers that come very short with a large hem to let down, then there'd be less altering for parents of shortlegged boys to do.
Add cotton PE shorts to the range.

Website could be streamlined to help someone buying a whole load of uniform. Allow user to specify just once what their child(ren)'s age/size is, and what colours, then you could offer options to help fill the basket. e.g. if someone buys grey trousers, suggest grey shorts, socks. If this was done subtly so it didn't come over as pushy, it could make the process of ordering quicker and easier. You might also consider suggested quantities (helpful to parents whose child is starting in reception perhaps - the Mumsnet tip about getting 6 shirts so you have one for each day and a pristine one for the school photograph for instance), again, if not done pushily, this might appeal.

Bit early to say. So far, the trousers look promising, I'm not bowled over by the rest but it all seems adequate and well-priced. I would have been prepared to pay a little more for uniform made of cotton that is organic and fairly traded.

I got some packs of polo shirts, school trousers and school shorts and a jumper and this all came to about 20 pounds and I will buy more nearer to sept. I think its great value tbh!

I'm not sure if the trousers are teflon or not I hadn't noticed

Some of the jumper colours could be a bit more clearly labelled. Various shades of red all labelled red, if you could make it maroon etc it will be easier/clearer to find the rarer colours

Yes - very good value. I find the official school jumpers from dc's school such bad quality and so expensive, I would really rather buy all tesco things but then dc moans about no logo but I feel the value and quality is better!

Q1 I bought 6 polo shirts, 2 trousers, school shoes for dd2 and d's, tights, socks, skirts and pe kit. I spent 75.00 and also got some trousers for work for myself. Yes I thought this was great value.

Q2 The quality seems fine but I thought the trousers seemed a little thin , dark (grey) and to shiny which makes them look cheap.

I received my order last week. I have one ds aged five and I bought 2 pairs of grey Teflon coated trousers in longer length age 5-6, 2 pairs of Teflon coated shorts, 8 polo shirts, leather shoes and PE shorts.

On first inspection I must say I was very impressed with the quality and price, the polo shirts are equal quality to the M&S and Asda ones he already has but for £1 each are an amazing price. My ds is tall for his age but I was glad to see the shirts are very roomy and nice and long. They wash well and retain their shape .

The shorts are fab. Well cut and a nice dark grey. The length are perfect for ds just touching the knee. The adjustible waist on one pair doesn't work on one side as the elastic has been stitched over but that is my only complaint. He got chocolate on one pair which washed out no problem.

I haven't had chance for him to wear the long trousers yet but he has tried them on and I'm very impressed. I struggle to get trousers long enough in the leg (whilst still being slim in the waist) for ds so decided to try the age 5-6 in longer length. They were perfect and ds looked very grown up in them as they have a tapered leg and proper fly and catch unlike the straight up and down pull up ones he presently wears.

The leather school shoes are great, a perfect fit and equal quality to the Clarks he presently wears.

With regard to the Teflon coating I noticed the sheen on the items I ordered which I assume is the Teflon coating. It's more noticeable than the Teflon items I have from M&S. I haven't noticed any difference in getting stains out to items I already have to be honest.

In a nutshell the quality of the items more than matched my expectations and were on an equal par to M&S but cheaper. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending them.

I too had problems and had to do 4 separate orders as only one set of numbers, which I believe are the vouchers would fit in the box provided.
I think you just get numbers which look like MNY8K and there are 4 of them. I presumed each was worth £25.
Can anybody verify this and also how did you get it to accept more than one voucher in the order.

I thought I'd managed to collect my order this morning, but had a phone call this evening to say that there had been a mistake and they'd give me someone else's order. I have a double barrelled surname and am quite used to companies making up their own version, so thought nothing of getting a parcel with Mrs S Ponsonby on the label rather than Mrs M Ponsonby-Smythe.

Sadly Mrs S Ponsonby had actually ordered stuff which I now have .

However, in the interests of this feedback thread, I did go to the big Tescos near me tonight and had a proper look at the school uniform, ad I have to say, it did all look pretty good. Good quality, firm seams, nice styles. Will get DD to actually wear her stuff when I get my order tomorrow, and do some proper feedback then. Wonder how apologetic they'll be tomorrow morning ?

Q4 I felt that the website would benefit from recommending uniform for each age group. The ages were confusing as they could be read as school years rather than ages. There was limited stock and I couldn't get quite. Few things in the sizes I wanted. Also why stop elasticated waist bands past the age of 10 - 11? My d's is small so I went for that size but if he was taller I would want an age 11- 12 but still need an elasticated waistband.

Q5 yes I would recommend it it all seems good value but still reserving judgement on the trousers. And want to see how the polo shirts / shoes fair. Maybe keep this going in September when they have a good run wearing them.

I bought long and short sleeved white blouses, pleated skirts, summer dresses and a school coat for dd, spent around £60

All seems good quality, similar to M and S which I bought last year and better than some I have previously bought at various supermarkets. Particularly pleased with the summer dresses which button all down the front and have a tie waist - excellent features for the price.

I haven't had to get stains out of any of the uniform yet but the feel and wash of the skirts was good after washing, they were Teflon coated but I don't think anything else was.

The school coat was really not very generously sized compared to the rest of the clothes. If it hadn't have been free I would be returning for a larger size as I can't see it lasting beyond Christmas.

i bought quite a range of school items both for boys and girls, trousers, tshirts,skirts,blouses , socks, underwear, jogger pants plus i bought dd a winter coat which i cant test yet as its too nice im sure it will be fine. I spent £102 in total & bought dd some summer items too but spent most of it on uniform. Im pleased with the amount i got for the money.

I was a little disappointed with the school skirt as the pleats dont stay in very well after wear or washing (dont have this trouble with her next school skirts & next are cheaper ) im a lazy moo busy working mum so dont like to spend hours a long time ironing pants were fab though both boys found them very comfy to wear (no holes in the knees) so withstood boyish play. dd's blouses wash very well and i found these very easy to iron bearly any creases after washing. material on all items felt nice and not cheap flimsy material so should last a good while yet.

I dont remember buying anything teflon coated but im pretty sure the school pants i bought both boys must have it as they were pristine when they came home and usually they are rotten after rolling all over the floor playing football. I think they will stay cleaner than normal and quite liked them to be honest.

pleats that stay in the skirts after washing would be fantastic more variety of skirts as well as this was the only skirt dd liked (fussy 8 yr old )

Yes i would, i usually buy all schoolwear from next as it lasts well & washes/fits lovely but i have to admit tescos was just as good though not cheaper in many items & i was quite surprised in all honesty i didnt think it would be as good but it was.

I spent just over £80 plus delivery. I have quite a lot to say!

Question 1, 2 and 3.

For DD2 (11 years old) I bought:
Knee high socks - pack of five
Crop-tops, white - pack of five
Vests, white - pack of three
Tights - 40 denier nylon tights - two pack
Polo tops, white with ruffle detail - sold separately
Plain polo tops, white - pack of two
A knitted scallop edged cardigan
A hooded, zip-up PE jumper
Pinafore - Jersey material
Pinafore - normal uniform fabric (cotton mix?)
Skirt - jersey material, no detail
Skirt - normal uniform fabric, elasticated waist two-pack
Skirt - 'buy one give one' (love this!) normal fabric
A blazer
A button-up summer dress with sash.

For DD1 (14) I ordered:
A value (75p) polo top
A jersey cardigan
A normal uniform skirt

My children are fairly stocky, both very well developed (womanly) for their age. DD2 is slightly tall for her age, but still buy age appropriate clothes (size 10-11 years). DD1 is adult size 8-10, short or 15-16 in child clothes - I bought according to the size I would usually purchase. Both go down a size for skirts due to tiny waist. It is unusual to find trousers to fit (due to tiny waist and large bum). In either option I will only look for adjustable waist to save messing about with returns.

There were no trousers either would wear, despite searching two stores I couldn't find a replacement skirt for DD1, they were all too wide or when width was okay, too short.

All the items were well priced, therefore by 'value' I am marking by poor quality; anything I had to throw away or replace - waste of time spent, waste of cloth, waste of money.

Poor value :

• Pack of vests. These were too thin (actually see-through) and twisted terribly in the first wash - they tangled around DD to an extent I had to throw them out. (I tried to pull them straight when wet and tried to iron the straight.) Further to this, the edging turned a horrible grey colour after just one wash (40 degrees, biological liquid).
  

• Jersey cardigan. Horrible design - imagine a wide and short school regulation PE sweatshirt with buttons. I haven't washed it because I aim to return it at some point.
  

• value polo top. Very thin (to the point of being see through), with a white bra/crop top it could be okay. However, it twisted and shrunk in the wash (40 degree wash, line dry). This was bad - the collar ended up two inches above the sleeves in hunch-back fashion, the arm holes were tiny, the fabric twisted terribly - as with the vests.
  

• All the dresses. These have been made with a huge amount of spare fabric and very little shape - Think potato bag! Even on DD1 the pinafores were too wide (although far too short). I understand the need to cater for all sizes and with the spare at least I could take the dresses in, but I don't have time for that sort of messing about. Perhaps a re-think is in order because my children are not thin.
  

...Tesco, children do not want to become tangled in their clothing, nor to I wish to spend twice as long on each item trying to iron the clothes in to straight order. There is such a simple solution - cut the cloth along the weave! I am skint, I would love to be able to spend 75p on a top, but these are just rude to those of us who are trying to keep a tight budget.

Good Value

- The ruffle polo tops. These are very very pretty. Surprisingly thick, they have kept a nice crisp white colour so far and keep their shape nicely in the wash. They are slightly long (which DD likes - I would prefer this length tucked in, DD would not - this is not a huge issue), otherwise these are a very good fit.

- The scalloped edge cardigan. This is also very pretty and well made, although too thin for colder months - it seems to be exactly the same make as in Sainsburys and Asda. I am yet to find a thicker cardigan anywhere else so I can't fault Tesco on it. (If you manage to make a thicker, pretty cardigan - that doesn't fall apart al la John Lewis - then you can guarantee I would return to you for uniform Tesco.)

- 'Buy One Give One' Skirt. The skirt is good value in it's self, but for each item sold in this range Tesco donate a whole uniform (not sure who to). I really like this idea!

- The blazer - this only just makes the 'good value' list - again it is far too wide, a little too long, and when DD lifts her arms the whole jacket lifts up and her elbows appear (wide girth, short arms, too low armpit holes). The fabric is a little too shiny for my liking. I haven't dare try to wash it because I hate ironing blazers. However, for the price (ten pounds! Rather than the usual £50 (£80 for DD1!), I would definitely purchase this again - giving DD strict instructions not to lift her arms ;) A grey option would be fab.

- The zip-up PE hoody. This is a little thin, so won't be suitable for winter, nor do I think it will hold it's colour for long - but it is a PE top. Otherwise very well made, a good fit.

- The summer dress with a sash. Again, this only just makes this list - it is too wide (pulled in with the tie-up sash), and the accompanying scrunchy was not very 'scrunchy' (there was no elasticity): not a problem for me, but DD found this very upsetting - the matching scrunchy was the thing she was most looking forward to. With the sash pulled in this dress looked lovely, DD loves wearing it - the button holes are well made, the fabric is thick enough to maintain modesty, without being too hot. There is a nice detail to the collar, the colour is good and looks like it would keep very well.

- The socks. Have kept their shape, are the correct length (stop just below the knee) and don't appear to be loosing colour in the wash. I particularly like that there is a pack of five - one for each day.

• The crop-tops. These are very well made, a great size (not too wide, not too tight), DD finds them comfy. They are white (so don't stand out under the polo tops - something DD dislikes), and have washed very well keeping their colour and shape. Again, I really like that there are five in the pack. The only addition I might make is the addition of a little support, perhaps with some darting?
  

Question 4

I found the selection for teenagers very poor. DD1 (14) actually turned everything down. For instance DD would only like to wear skater skirts now they have been approved at school - there was nothing fashionable. I did persuade her to test items in the house.

Only a small portion of the items delivered were listed on the delivery note, which suggests there should have been a second delivery note. There is definitely one item missing - but without the delivery note I can't be sure if this just failed to 'update' on the web page, or if it is on it's way in a later delivery.

I would like to suggest that Tesco put some serious work into their website - for such a large company, this website 'feels' incredibly cheap! It behaves very cheap too - it is slow to keep track of purchases, the total does not keep up a pace. It takes ages to load a new page or filter selections (tried two different computers). Shopping can not be done during lunch or whilst dinner is cooking - this is a crucial factor for me. It is very disappointing to have to put things back.

It is also very very frustration to think I had all the uniform sorted, only to have items cancelled just before delivery, due to being out of stock. I can't afford another £4/5 on postage for replacements, nor do I have time to go through the whole online shopping process only for goods to be cancelled again - I went searching through two local stores and found replacements for most, except a skirt for DD1. I wanted to find at least one outfit to test for DD1, and a good range for DD2 (easier to please) - if I wasn't product testing, I would have turned to Asda, M&S or John Lewis, because I know their online ordering and size systems work.

I think this shopping experience has unpleasantly 'flavoured' my purchases - they are not such shiny-fab new items. Having started out so excited, I feel a bit of an ungrateful sour puss. I hope at least this helps develop the site.

Question 5

If the website was up to scratch I would probably recommend F&F to friends - although there is nothing in particular that makes F&F stand out from Asda, or Sainsburys - the price puts F&F above M&S and John Lewis (fab polo tops and 'Buy One Give One' do not make up for the hassle'). With the website being so difficult, the cancelled items and poor sizing would put me off risking this again, as such I would not jump to recommend F&F.

I ordered 5 Polo shirts, 4 trousers, 2 school sweatshirts and 2 school V Neck jumpers and a fleece lined reversable rain mac, some leather school shoes and school socks. Total cost around £80 which I think is great value for money.

The overall quality and feel of the uniform really impressed me. I usually buy all my kids clothes and uniforms from Next and am used to high quality so I was super happy when this arrived and I found the quality to be just as good. The jumpers have washed really well and altohugh it's early days show no signs of shrinking or fading. The shoes look very smart so hopefully they'll last. I was very pleasantly surprised by the overall quality.

The trousers I bought were Teflon fabric and I have to say that they look great, and the feel of the fabric is good. They don't seem to attract dirt which is brilliant, some fabrics seem to get very dirty and are hard to clean but my DS hasn't had a problem with these, they have also washed well and haven't held onto any stains or marks at all. To early to tell how durable they are but so far so good.
The rest of the uniform in general seems to be ok as far as keeping clean and stain free, the jumpers obviously haven't had alot of wear due to the weather but the couple of times they have been worn and washed, I have had no problems and there are no marks on them at all.

Q4
The main thing I would like to see changed is the fit of the trousers. My DS is quite a small build, tall but thin. I find with the trousers that although you can adjust the waist, the general fit, especially bottom and thigh area are way too big. I have in the past ordered school trousers from Next and they offer a standard fit, slim fit and plus fit. I have always found the slim fit a perfect fit for DS in the correct age group so they also fit him in the leg length.
Apart from that I think they have it pretty spot on.

I would happily recommend the F&F school uniform to family and friends, and have infact done so already.

Q1 Which items from the range did you buy and how much did you spend? Would you say this was good value for money or not?

I bought some pale blue polo shirts, some Signature grey cargo shorts, grey trousers and a pair of boys shoes. I spent about £50 on these. Definitely good value for money, particularly the polo shirts which were £1 each! I would have liked to buy a lot more but there was limited choice in my DC's sizes

Q2 Did the overall quality of the school uniforms match your expectations? If so, how? If not, why not?

I would say the quality was better than expected. For £1 I wasn't expecting much from the polo shirts but they are good quality, have been washed a couple of times now and still look better than others I have bought from other supermarkets. The shorts are also good quality. Unfortunately I haven't been able to test the trousers due to the weather () and DS1 has only worn his new shoes 4 times so far so still too early to tell if they will last

Q3 If you bought any Teflon® coated fabric, did you like or dislike it? Did you notice any difference to the uniform staying clean at all? Did the fabric help when trying to get stains out? Do you think the fabric is likely to be more or less durable than other school uniform fabric?

I am not sure if I did buy any of these - if I did it wasn't well advertised as I don't remember reading it

Q4 Do you have any other feedback that could help F&F improve their schoolwear again next year?

If you can produce a polo shirt that doesn't need ironing, that would be great - the only one I have found that so far doesn't need ironing is the expensive one from the specialist supplier with the school logo on. Have more in stock online as I would have liked to have ordered more items but couldn't

Q5 Finally, if it came up in conversation would you recommend F&F schoolwear range to friends or family? If so, why? If not, why not?

Definitely - I have been very impressed with it. The polo shirts look smart (once I have ironed them ) and feel to be good quality - cannot believe how cheap they were. I love the shorts aswell although I did go for the more expensive Signature ones as these were the only ones available in DS1's size. I would have liked to be able to test them over a longer period but the DC break up from school on Friday so the uniform will be going in a drawer and I hope it still fits in September - however, the first day DS1 wore his new shorts, shirts and shoes last week, he looked very smart - particularly as he was looking VERY scruffy previously as I was using old uniform that had seen better days
