NOW CLOSED: Tesco’s Naturally Powered (antibacterial spray or non-bio washing powder) product testers review thread

AnnMumsnet · 01/05/2012 14:54

This thread is for the 1000 Mumsnetters who are trying out the Naturally Powered range of cleaning products by Tesco.

If you don't know about these products, here's what Tesco has to say:

"In the past, green cleaning products have been let down by their performance. Working closely with a team of chemists, scientists and environmental experts, we have created the Naturally Powered range of eco cleaning products - specially formulated to have a reduced impact on the environment than other leading products and with the cleaning performance you'd expect."

Mumsnetters have been testing either the antibacterial spray or the non-bio washing powder. In addition, all testers received a trial-sized sachet of washing up liquid.

If you are a tester, please state which product you were testing and answer the questions below - feel free to also add any other comments you may have.

Everyone who adds their comments to this thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one person will win £200 of Tesco vouchers.

Questions:

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them?

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw!

Seems to work just as well as my normal brand. Did like the espresso cup but didn't notice the line on the side so went by the instructions on back of packet 1cup=30g which double dosed the powder- oops! Managed to scoop it out before the wash went on. Will report back when used it a few more times.

Q1. Had never heard of them but don't really like 'eco' products much (as I tend to think they are not very efficient).

Q2. Spray - excellent, really good smell ie: you can tell you have been cleaning Grin. Very efficient too,

Q3. Probably no better/no worse than my usual product. But a lot better than another well known 'eco' brand that I have tested recently.

Q4. Not at all bothered about 'green' issues, of no interest to me Blush.

Q5. Yes, would use again if price is good.

Q6. No suggestions

Q7. Yes (not sure what sort of conversation you would be having to discuss cleaning products though !!).

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them?
I have tried other 'eco' products and they haven't been the best so probably not a high opnion!

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?
The anti bac spray is amazing! It works brilliantly, smells lovely and I'm very happy with its perforrmance.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?
I usually use an apple scented product but this product works bbetter!

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?
I don't normally buy anti bac on its eco credentials, I buy it because I know it kills germs and that's what I need, the green creditials aren't important for me.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?
Yes I will, because it works and works well, plus it smells nice!

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?
The washing up liquid was crap, it left an after taste on my plates, despite, rinsing them in cold water as I normally do. This needs to change for me to buy it again!

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?
I already have! I've converted my best friend and will recommend it again!

I tested the washing powder.

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them?
I didn't know about them.

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?
Overall opinion was that they work very well. Performance-wise, I did an 8kg load of laundry on cold (15 degrees or so). The load contained childrens' clothes with baked bean sauce all over them, and a tablecloth that'd had melted butter spilt on it. We have hard water, so I used 90g of powder, as per the instructions, and it all came out perfectly clean.
The smell is pleasant, but a little overpowering.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?
Worked better than the stuff I usually use. All the stains came out first time, on a cold wash, with no pre-soaking or extra stain remover, which is pretty unheard of normally.

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?
The green credentials are important, but my decision to buy would mainly be dependent on price.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?
If it's not too expensive, yes.

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?
It's possibly just a little strong smelling.

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?
Definitely.

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them?

I hadn't really seen them before but have used other ranges of eco cleaning products in the past.

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?

I used the anti bacterial spray and thought the smell was lovely, very fresh. It cleaned really well and left my tiles sparkling.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?

They worked just as well as what I usually use but I preferred the fragrance of this cleaner

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?

I am starting to really think about what I am buying and the effects it has on the environment so yes it would affect my decision to buy.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?

Yes because I feel its a reasonably priced range that works very well.

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?

Nothing I really liked the anti bacterial spray that I tested

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes I would recommend the products as they smell great and work really well

Washing powder

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them?
*Strong smelling but a nice smell, didnt make me sneeze which some can do. Small packaging for 13 washes, which looks good. own dispensing cup for measuring, very good!

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?
*Clothes were washed very well. fresh and clean smell, but no fragrance which is good. clothes felt clean, no greasy layer which can happen with some powders. no white powder residue. and when dry clothes still felt good.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?
*I would say they worked just as well, with less powder than i normally use.

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?
*i am more bothered about how good they are for sensitive skin, but i would say 10% of my decision to buy would be based on their green credentials.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?
*This would depend on price. If the price is competative to what i currently use, i would consider changing.

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?
*none

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?
*if it was approprite for the friend. some people wouldnt change no matter what the green credentials.

I've been using the non-bio washing powder and washing up liquid.

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them?

I wasn't aware of them before.

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?

Nice packaging, liked the cardboard measuring cup - felt very environmentally friendly! Laundry powder worked ok, but not as well as my usual brand. Really liked the washing up liquid - nice smell and feel, good long lasting bubbles.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?

The laundry didn't smell as fresh as when I use my usual brand - in fact I popped it straight back in the machine for a quick wash with half a dose of my usual brand, to freshen it up afterwards... which defeats the purpose, I suppose! Also it didn't do a great job on the chalk and food stains on DD's white school shirts. I usually use Ariel biological which I appreciate is probably less environmentally friendly and more artificially fragranced, and has enzymes!

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?

Most important factors for me are clean, fresh-smelling clothes and stain removal. I've tried Ecover and Surcare in the past and also found they didn't work quite so well. Would like to buy eco-friendly, and would happily pay a bit more for it, but not if it doesn't work as well!

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?

No for reasons above.

Q1. I'd never heard of them!

Q2. I absolutely love the smell of the antibacterial spray and also the washing up liquid sample, they're not chemically smelly at all, and really do smell fresh and natural. I've tried making my own cleaning products before with essential oils and these smell similar.

Q3. The small sample of washing up liquid seemed to clean just as well as my regular liquid and the antibacterial spray is fantastic, I used it to help clean the sides of my oven (the sides that never see daylight but collect all the grease) and it really helped to lift all the muck off.

Q4. I really do prefer products that I use to be greener but I also like to be sure that they do the job they're intended for. It definitely affects whether I decide to buy them or not because I care about the environment and the health of my family but cost is also an important factor for me.

Q5. I think I'll definitely buy these two products again and try the other products in the range too, as long as they are reasonably priced. I am especially pleased that the antibacterial spray doesn't make me wheeze like other sprays do.

Q6. I have to be honest there's nothing I would change, although it might be nice to have a clearer description of what natural products are actually used.

Q7. Definitely. My friends know that I like to try and use environmentally friendly products so I would be happy to recommend this range to them.

Questions:

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them?

I hadn't really noticed them tbh

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?

The washing powder cleaned a very muddy wash. We have soft water so I put the recommended amount in for a soft wash heavy soil. The clothes were clean but it left a lot of powder clogged up in the drawer which didn't wash away in subsequent washes. It also left some white streaks on our dark wash. The powder smelt nice in the box but no smell was left on our clothing after the wash.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?

Unfortunately it worked less well than our current product as it left the drawer clogged and streaks on our dark clothes.

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?

The green credentials of a product are important to me. I would be more likely to buy a greener product.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?

I won't continue to buy the product as it had no labelling to say that it had not been tested on animals. That is my main requirement when choosing toiletries and cleaning products and I was dissappointed as many of the Tesco own brand products are not tested on animals.

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?

I would make it dissolve better in soft water and I would not test it on animals.

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

I wouldn't be able to recommend the product as it appears to have been tested on animals and doesn't dissolve well in our water.

Thanks to MN and Tesco for chance to try this.

I tested the antibacterial spray.

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them?
I hadn't previously heard of them, apart from introduction in this test, so was open minded.

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?
Very nice smell and cleaned as well as other products with similar "pitch".
Bottle rather flimsy and cheap-feeling. Leaked in transit, which makes me wonder if it would leak in my shopping.
Packaging looked good.
Disappointed that "eco" credentials only related to a natural ingredient. The rest of the ingredients were chemical, no different from other antibacterial sprays, with only one surfactant being "natural". No mention of biodegradability. Feel that the "eco" push to this is slightly cynical.
It wasn't clear whether you were meant to wipe with a dry paper towel (like some antibac cleaners I use) or a damp cloth (like others). Some antibac sprays lose their effectiveness when combined with water so this is important if you're looking for the germ-killing qualities.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?
It worked as well as other antibac cleaners I use, and smelled much better.

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?
This doesn't change my opinion as I don't feel this is a properly "green" product.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?
Yes because I feel its a reasonably priced range that works very well.

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?
Better quality bottle, more information (see above).

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?
Possibly, although we don't often discuss such things!

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them? 'Meh'. Thought they'd just be rubbish ecover knock-offs so hadn't bought them (even though I'd seen them in store).

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?
I really like the smell (antibac kitchen spray), it works well & I like the two options on the nozzle for spray & stream (it's the little things).

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?
Just as well (normally use ecover), but I much prefer this product's smell...and the range of products (my local Tesco doesn't stock much of the ecover stuff).

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?
Very important, like that it's supportive of sustainable palm oil.
I'm happy to buy something green even if it's substantially more expensive than the non-green alternative.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?
Yes, I like the range of products & would prefer to use something less chemical than bleach.
However it would be nice to find out if the products are manufactured by a less than reputable company (it's not on the label or the naturally powered website).

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?
If you don't leave the nozzle in the 'off' setting the bottle sprays when squeezed..my own fault but just thought I should mention it!

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes. It's cheap and effective, and most of the people I know are lentil weavers. Grin
