Join us on Monday 10 June at 8.30pm for an evening webchat with Richard Bacon, Radio 5 Live broadcaster, ex-Blue Peter presenter and now author of his memoir, A Series of Unrelated Events. In his book Richard gives a frank and very funny glimpse into his life and the mistakes he's made along the way, from upsetting a band on live TV, performing stand-up comedy to a group who were funnier than him to letting down all the children of Great Britain. As well as Blue Peter, Richard has presented TV shows including the Big Breakfast and Top of the Pops and currently hosts a weekday Radio 5 Live afternoon show.

Join Richard at 8.30 pm on Monday 10 June or post a question to him in advance on this thread. Everyone who joins the discussion will be entered into a draw to win one of five signed copies of his book.

Ooh I really like his show on radio 5.
His interview with Ruby Wax recently was really interesting especially given how she tends to just steam roller conversations through sheer force of personality.

I always thought he sounded a bit scared of mumsnet

The webca coincides with part of the school run but will try to get back.

I would probably like him to say which interviewee was least like their on-screen persona. And is John Simm as fantastic as he seems to be.

Oh that's annoying. I just realised my questions to Richard would be about other people. That must be an interviewers curse. No one ever says 'so Parky, tell me about you'

I love Richard Bacons 5live show. He's really natural and seems genuinely excited about some really nerdy topics that always turn out to be fascinating.

People still remember the drug scandal, Richard. Do you have regrets about that part of your life? I was of the generation who remembers your apology on the TV

I'd like to ask how he copes when he realises quite soon into an interview that the interviewee isn't going to say much and is quite 'closed' and they come across as grumpy.

Does he monitor twitter on air for a reaction?

Why bother giving in to the pressure to apologise when there are a good few parents taking far more drugs than you probably ever did?

It was a shame that you had to make such a forced public act of contrition.

Ah, I thought this was going to be a webchat with my MP, but I see it is the other Richard Bacon.

So, my question is, has anyone ever come on the moan-in specifically to complain about the way you sign off your show. 'Ba-bye'. Because it grinds my gears. But I think you know that...

(Love the show btw)

(Up until that.point)

I LOVE the ba-bye! Only get to hear it once a week, but it is one of my highlights. My question would be: given that your life must be quite 'starry', how do you stay sounding so normal?

BeetleBugBaby · 09/06/2013 17:40

I think it was bang on right getting him to apologise! Especially given his position at the time!

Report
mignonette · 09/06/2013 17:45

These apologies are issued based upon advice given by PR teams, managers, agents in order that career damage is contained and suitable opportunities for interviews (paid) can be exploited. They are an automatic response and are pretty meaningless in reality. Time passes, people move on,a career resurrects if there is talent either that of the celeb or his management/PR team.

An apology that comes from 'getting' is not a true voluntary one.

I best like Jo Brand's intro to the MoanIn. Don't keep changing it.

Hi Richard

Just wondering how excited you are about the mighty Stags return to the football league?

Is there a quote or a motto that you try to adhere to?

So these frank and funny remembrances - when do they start from? Do they start from school going years or the years trying to get into the limelight or basically when you were in the limelight for all the wrong reasons?

Its easy to put a spin on things after the event, especially a funny spin. But what events - other than the one everyone knows about with Blue Peter - have really shaped your life?

Hi Richard, why did "Help!" disappear?
I don't miss it at all, but just wonder why it was stopped.

Also, do you miss anything at all about the late night show? I used to listen to you when you did that. (i still listen in the day too)! Obviously it was a good move for you to do the afternoons instead, but is there anything about the late night programme that you preferred?

Richard, big fan and particularly love the 5Live show. Do you prefer tv or radio and why? Also, what do you really think about the relocation to media city, do you ever have lunch in the Blue Peter garden? Grin

Richard,

I quite like you, but I'm not sure why.

Can you think of a reason? I've tried, but no luck.

Cheers x

Eh up duck. Being born and bread Notts as am I, I have to ask, did you ever put fairy liquid in the slab square fountains?

Why do you hate dogs & pets so much? Especially as your mum loves her dog so much.

Hi Richard

Hated the late night show you did on R5, love the afternoon show, couldn't care less what you got upto when you where on Blue Peter Smile.

i know you've done a lot of work surrounding young people and politics, do you think it is important to try and make politics more engaging for the general population and do you see yourself as the young persons Andrew Neil?

Love the show, think you are great.

Question: do you ever struggle to keep a lid on your emotions when interviewing idiots? Are you calling them twats in your head as your listeners are screaming it at the radio? Grin

Hi Richard, I am a podcast hero, one of those people who you prefer to the people who listen live...

When are you going to start electing some more podcast superheros? You've been doing your podcast links during the actual show a lot lately - very poor form I think. Surely you must have some podcast superhero emails to read out?

Do you think your reaction to certain topics in the news has been affected by becoming a father?

I've listened to you for a long time and I think you've matured a lot in the past two years. That isn't meant to sound as catty as it appears.

Love the show, listen to podcasts mainly. Please stop banging on about London versus Manchester, we get that you prefer London but it's getting tired now!

How do you deal with the shifts in tone demanded of you on R5? One minute you can be talking about something trivial and then suddenly some breaking, tragic news. I think you're really good at it but how difficult is it to do?

Is Shelagh Fogarty as fab as she sounds?
