Better Miscarriage Care Campaign: Freedom of Information results now in!

RowanMumsnet · 18/10/2012 16:16

Hello

Following the launch of our Better Miscarriage Care campaign last year, we sent out Freedom of Information requests to all the hospital trusts in England to see how they measured up against our code of care.

The results are now in, and you can see them here; do have a look at the PDF of the full report, so that you can see whether your local trust responded, and how they did.

Overall it seems to be a positive picture, although some trusts are clearly doing a lot better than others. And, as ever with these things, there may be some gaps between policies and the way care is actually delivered on a day-to-day basis.

Whether you think your trust isn't always delivering on its stated policies, or you think its policies could be better, or you would like to congratulate it on its good performance, we'd love to know what you think.

You'll see the results page contains a widget for writing to your MP if you want to ask him or her to respond to any concerns.

(We know it isn't ideal that these results are England-only. The NHS structures vary in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and as this is the first time we've done a Freedom of Information exercise we thought it best to stick to just one administration for now - and the English NHS is by far the largest, and so gives us the most useful dataset. You can see the original FoI requests we sent out on this page: if you're outside England (but in the UK!) and would like to submit a request to the relevant body, please feel free to use ours, and do let us know what response you get.)

Thank you for uploading this.

The PDF is very long and it takes quite a bit of effort to find a particular hospital trust- is there any chance of producing an index OR putting the trusts in alphabetical order to make it easier to navigate, please?

Hi Captain,

Have you tried hitting 'Control' and 'F', and then entering a search term? It should help you to find out whether your trust is in there.

If that doesn't work, let me know which trust you're looking for (email us on [email protected] and mark it 'FAO Rowan' if you don't want to post it on here) and I will see if I can find it for you.

Thank you this is really interesting. My hospital who left DH and I in a room alone for 3 hours after the scan are not on there! Surprise surprise!

Horatio, you can do a search for your trust name quite quickly but like the idea of an index

Rowan, the trust I had my miscarriages with is almost undoubtedly telling porkies on their response - do you want me to email you ?

I miscarried at home, waited two weeks for a scan, then sat in waiting room surrounded by healthy pregnancy info, when we asked directions on the way in a nurse asked if we were excited. It broke my heart.

This hospital didn't respond either.

Sad

I've just read the answers my trust provided. They are lying too. :( it makes me so sad that even now they don't see what they did wrong.

I am so angry at them. Absolute utter bastards. Angry

On my phone so can't check but the response I received from the epu doesn't fill me with hope for the results.

Thanks Rowan, that worked a treat!

My hospital is on there, they missed out half the questions, which speaks for itself, but in my experience the ones that they answered are a work of fiction as CMOTDibbler mentioned in her post above too (would be interesting to see if it is the same trust!) Would refuting comments be useful? If so can we PM rather than post them?

This is very interesting but shows what happens on paper and real life is very different.
I had a scan to confirm a mc in the antenatal dept not even the epac, the waiting area was full of ladies waiting for their 12 and 20wk scans. That is not kept separate!

Hello

Just responding quickly as I'm not really here: first off, probably best not to name on here any trusts whose responses you think are incorrect, as that could lead us into legal trouble. But do feel free to email me ([email protected], FAO Rowan -better than PMing as it's easier for me to keep on top of) and we will think about ways forward.

Asmywhimsytakesme - we fed back very strongly to NICE that that proposal was roundly rejected on here; they are currently considering the consultation responses. We will let you know as soon as we hear what conclusion they've come to.

That makes very interesting reading (and a lot to work through).
I'm interested that my local Trust only seem to have responded to the first half of the questions, it's a shame because the missing information actually undermines the really positive responses they gave for the first few questions.

I think my trust's response was fairly accurate. I wasn't impressed with the pain relief offered in many trusts including my own. From my own experience and talking to other women, non surgical treatment of a missed miscarriage discovered at the dating scan will involve pain similar to labour, regardless of how early the baby died. Why do they think paracetamol and ibuprofen will be enough. Give us decent drugs if we want them!

My trust doesn't seem to have responded. How can that be? I thought you had to respond to FOI requests?

My trust claims they offer scanning 7 days a week. Ha! Only for pixies at weekends though.

My trust have replied and i have to say that it sounds like a different hospital altogether from my experiences there!

Doesnt mention that despite a multi milion pound new "women & childrens" building recently built and opened that there is NO, i repeat NO gynea ward on there at all.....

So miscarrying women are put onto general surgical wards.

It was lovely being in agony with Gas & air and morphine with a mastectomy at one side of me and a bowel resection on the other, me labouring behind a set of curtains, not a single gynae trained nurse on the ward who knew that massive blood loss could be a possible major side effect of miscarriage..oh and that an occasional blood pressure as well as blood loss check every now and again may give them a tiny clue!

Lurvly experience.

Heap of crap is the message i think here.

Thankyou for this.

The way miscarrying women are treated in my trust is disgusting. Both myself and a close friend have had awful experiences.

Sent away to 'bleed it out'. No support, having to go back because of worry of infection but being made to feel stupid. Examinations were unbelievably clinical and cold. No pain relief made available, bleeding for two weeks none stop but this wasn't an issue apparently. My infection test results were sent to the wrong address.

Awful awful experience and such lame care.
