Just seen this -
Walmart to Launch Tween Targeted Beauty Line
from Beauty Packaging Breaking News by Steve Katz
Walmart is planning to launch a new beauty brand that is directly targeted to tweens, a demographic with an estimated 2 billion dollars buying power. Walmart's new brand called GeoGirl will debut in February and will be replacing the Mary-Kate and Ashley cosmetics range.

The skin care and makeup products from the brand are designed to be eco friendly as the brand aims encouraging a responsible attitude towards environmental problems.

?GeoGirl is about teaching this generation about beauty care in a responsible way. This [line] is a great learning experience for us to determine how to communicate with this generation," says Carmen Bauza, Wamart Stores Inc.?s vice president and divisional merchandise manager of beauty and personal care.

I like to see girls as girls and not loads of makeup or lipgloss - shame really. Girls need to be out playing sport and playing in the park.

my dd2 was sorting out her hair in plats on sunday before putting her cycling helmet on and said I love going tri training as no one there cares what you look like - I guess opposed to school where the girls are worried what they look like in class Sad

WalMart's launch of tween make-up is just business - they see an opportunity, tweens, and are out to exploit it. Tweens are just another market.
Except of course they are not, they are a vulnerable and unsophisticated. They don't understand the mixed messages of being a child doing adult things like wearing make-up. They don't understand the mixed message of enhancing their appearance while being an unavailable child. They are playing with mating rituals (make-up, appearance) in an innocent way but that does not mean that the effect is innocent.

It makes me cross that business can target our children, can decide to own their hearts and minds anytime they like because it makes a profit for them. We need to say loud and clear that our kids are not just another marketing opportunity.

So it's actually just replacing an outdated range already being sold?

Hi ILoveTIffanty - not sure if it's replacing, re-launching or launching - for me the worry is who they are targetting.
