Please Help Save Our School
Alfriston School in Beaconsfield offers a unique and exemplary educational provision for girls with moderate learning and associated disabilities. Described by Ofsted as an ?exceptional school? and ?outstandingly successful?, Alfriston educates and prepares its disabled pupils for adult life and social integration into the wider community. Primarily a day school, there is also a boarding facility, which plays a key role in enabling pupils to access the curriculum and has been rated ?outstanding? by Ofsted.

Despite Ofsted describing Alfriston as ?excellent value for money? and rating the school as ?outstanding? in November 2009, a draft proposal from Buckinghamshire County Council has put the school under serious threat. The Council?s preferred option would result in the redesignation of Alfriston as a co-ed, day school, enabled by a ?tightening of entry criteria?, which would result in significantly more girls with Moderate Learning Difficulties being educated in mainstream schools. The proposal would also result in the loss of single-sex and boarding provision.

The school is an exemplar in delivering a better, more appropriately matched education for disabled girls that enables them to grow, achieve and thrive. Rather than using the model to provide more opportunity for disabled children, the proposed changes will result in the permanent loss of this unique and successful educational provision with significantly more MLD and associated disability pupils being educated in mainstream schools that are unable to provide the level of support they require. This potentially places some children at risk and will certainly cause many vulnerable and disadvantaged pupils to be placed in social isolation in schools with a curriculum that is poorly matched to their needs.
