I've just had my first child, and have been given loads of lovely clothes by friends and family. Being an organised kind of girl, I arranged them by age in his drawers. What a mistake! I've just taken out the 3-6 mth batch, and DS is already too big for some of them!
He's only 10 wks old and 62cm long (75th percentile) and the 3-6 mth Mamas and Papas romper suit is already too short, as are two of the 3-pack of Next 3-6 mth sleepsuits. However the third in the 3-pack is larger, and fits, but not for long as DS continues to grow, and certainly not until he is 6 months old, as the label says it should.
To put this into context, according to the graphs in his Red Book, a 62cm long baby at 6mths old is less than the 1st percentile. Therefore, in order for a baby to fit into a Next sleepsuit at 6 mths old, they have to be absolutely tiny for thier age. But they are supposed to fit up to 18 pounds, which at 6 months is the 50th percentile.
Now I know that clothes will vary in size, as adult clothes do, but 50th percentile weight combined with 1st percentile height is ridiculous!
In fact the only clothes that have been accurate are those that include a length measurement on the label, as well as the weight and age. In these cases the length on 3-6 mth clothes is around the 50th to 75th percentile, which matches the 18 pound weight given on the labels. So far this has only been M&S and John Lewis. All the makes that have been way undersized have ONLY had weight and age on the labels.
PLEASE PLEASE can we have height added to the labels as standard, and more sensible and realistic clothes sizes made in the first place. How much money and how many clothes are being wasted due to skimpy sizing?? And how many tiny feet are being squished into sleepsuits that are too small, because the label says they should fit?
