Pre-labour for twins...

I am 35+1 weeks with MCDA twins (1st preg) and have been experiencing increasingly more painful BH contractions (period-type pain, tight back, etc etc)over the last few days. I can talk through them but def need to stop what I am doing occasionally and wait until they pass.

I also have suspected Obstetric Cholestasis as my ALT levels are a little high and I get quite itchy each night. I saw my consultant on Friday to talk about the OC and he has booked me for an induction at 38 weeks (with the possibility of moving a little earlier if my ALT levels continue to rise)....and I mentioned the painful contractions but he seemed quite unphased by them.

In a very long-winded way, I guess I'm just wondering how normal it is to get these - what I can only assume are pre-labour - contractions and does it mean that things are likely to happen before I get to 38 weeks?

Thanks in advance!!

I know it sounds easy to say... but try to get on with things and not focus on the contractions. It could go on for a while and with luck you'll go into labour naturally without needing the induction. I hope the OC is okay.

When you've time come and join us on the multiples thread d'y' ever!

I don't really know if it's the same for everyone, but with dd3 i got these about a week or two before actual labour. Really quite painful BH and getting more frequent. I had to keep stopping in the street to breathe slowly, and poor dh kept panicking, bless him. Marslady is right, don't panic, don't put life on hold, just treat it like practise for the real thing. And btw i do have twins too, but they are 10 now so no as recent as dd3.

No - that's reassuring. I am just getting on with things as I live about an hour from Tommy's (where I'm booked in) so I can't really face too many false alarms!!

I just hope I do know when the 'real' time has come though - but I guess that's every first-time mothers paranoia!!

Marslady - I will indeed come and join you as I often try and read the thread, but it seems to move so very fast - hard to keep up!!

I'll be wanting lots of advice re: breasfeeding twins and I know you guys are a font of knowledge.

Don't worry about keeping up. Just jump right in and say what you're saying! If you wait till you catch up we'll never see you!

Hiya Surfnicky,

I second or third, all said here. I too had terrible BH! It always seemed to be worse when I would be waddling around somewhere shopping..

I too, had to stop as was unable to move until they passed.

My BH was bad at around 30 weeks, but I gave birth to my two at 37.1 weeks.

It is scary and I didn't want to go anywhere in the end as the thought of being somewhere other than home for my waters breaking filled me with dread...

Looking back, I must have been a mare for my husband...!![sceptical]

I hope all is fine, and if you have had them by now, belated congratulations!

I think I'm experiencing the same; at 37 weeks I have painful tightenings when I'm in bed but rarely at any other times. I have to sit up, do some yoga exercises or walk around after which they tend to go away or reduce.

Saying that, it's difficult to tell whether my twins are simply very tight for room, from the back you still can't tell I'm pregnant so when I sleep on either side one baby puts pressure on the other one and regularly stick out bottoms/heads making my tummy v. bizar looking.

Only 5 days though until my induction so not long to wait, although I'm secretly hoping they arrive naturally before then!
