had never heard of this before, but googled it, and from what I could gage from

this
they are twins that share an amniotic sack. This apparently happens when the egg divides a little later into the pregnancy, at the point that the amniotic sack has been formed already, thus meaning that the twins will share the same space, and this does come with risks as the chords can become entangles.

hth.

Hertsnessex, before I had a decent scan my doctor thought my babies were momo (or MCMA). Its very, very rare and more likely that the dividing membrane just can't be seen and is more often misdiagnosed than actually the case. It is a very high risk pregnancy the highest risk to the twins is with cord entanglement which can be fatal to one or both twins. Identifying cord entanglement is also another way to identify if the twins are MOMO. If you have been diagnosed with MOMO twins then I would suggest going to somewhere where they can give you highest quality scan and diagnosis. Ensure that you are being cared for by someone that has experience with MOMO twins.

I researched htis quite a lot so let me know if you want more info. There is also a support forum that I can point you to.

I echo leogaela's comments.

Is it you ? How far pregnant are you ? Have you just had normal scans or one using the best resolution with a twins specialist ? I also had a while when they thought they may be MOMO - but after a few weeks using the best equipment they managed to spot the membrane between them.

on the twinsclub forums (www.twinsclub.co.uk) there was at least one person with momo twins - not sure if she still posts - I haven't been there for a while.

luckily both girls are here and weighed in at over 3lb each for 32wks, so its looknig ok for now.

ok - well if she has had them then she is past the danger stages - just whatever is normal for little premie babies.

Her babies will be identical (by definition they came from the same fertilised egg) - but may be different sizes.

Now she is pretty much the same as any other twin parent - coming to terms with the reality of having two babies to deal with at the same time. Tell her to not try and be a perfectionist - set realistic expectations and standards - and if you don't reach them don't worry about it.

Point her here as well, there are lots of us on the daily thread "D'y ever wonder....", some pg with twins, some with toddler twins, some with older twins. Love to have her, space on the couch for a few more !

My twins were MOMO - mono-chorionic, mono-amniotic. As Leo says it is very risky and very rare. Apparently it's all due to when the egg splits...early on and you get id twins that share a placenta but not a sac, later on and they share a sac as well...any later and you have conjoined twins. (I was told that by the sonographer at my 20 week scan.)

Mine were also born by CS, but at 37+4 weeks; they were both head-down from early on and I had been told I could try for a natural birth if I went into labour spontaneously so long as there were lots of medics around to help! But I was quite happy with the CS.

My DTs were 5lb7 and 5lb12 and are now happy, healthy 20 month olds. As throckenholt says, any danger from them being mono-mono twins is now past.

if your friend wants to chat, would be happy to. Best wishes to her, hope her DTs are healthy and home soon.

My friend was told until 32 weeks that her babies were MOMO, she gathered lots of information from american sites and made her own website (which i have misplaced for now) at the time i asked if i could include it in the links pages and someone at MNHQ (Justine/carrie i think) has experience of momo's so could point you to some relavant information
