Could it be twins..

I decided to have a search around the 'net, simply because this pregnancy is so different to my previous ones, and my mum seems convinced I'm having twins.

But now I've scared myself! It seems that I fall into several catergories where twins are more likely - my BMI is over 25, twins on both sides of the family (my gran, my dad and my sisters), and I've been pregnant 3 times before.
Then there are symptoms. I've had nausea for the past 5-6 weeks (I'm only 7 weeks according to my dates and CB digital test!), BFP showed very quickly 8 days before AF was due, I'm unbelievably tired, had stretching pains and SPD since 4wks, and palpitations and breathlessness since 5wks.

Does this sound familiar to anyone expecting/who has twins?? Not that it bothers me, it will be lovely obviously, just hard work and a shock after 2 singletons 4 years apart!

Every pregnancy is different. I have friends who had convinced themselves they were having twins as it was so different from their previous pregnancies, but weren't. I had no clue I was having twins until I had a scan (although I found out very early). There is no point worrying about it as your scan will tell soon enough (and if you're really that worried, maybe get a private early scan).

Agree if your worried get a private scan, I've had 3 pregnancies and 2 sets of twins and even the twin pregnancies were different - I was really really sick with the second set and was in maternity clothes mega early yet the first set of twins we had hardly any sickness and didn't have a clue until the 12 week scan x

Thanks both. You're right about them all being different, I think I'm just being a bit paranoid! Seeing the midwife next Friday so I should get my dating scan date the following week, I've calmed down a bit now so I should be able to manage another month!

Well I think it possible, but not a sure thing. Twins are only hereditary on the female side, for non identical twins so the twins on your dads side are not significant, and with your sisters not if they are identical. Looking back at my own experience, stretching pains and early positive testing are consistent as is nausea, but I know plenty of twin mums for whom this was not the case!

One thing that might be more significant, I thought I could feel my uterus just above my pelvic bone at 8 weeks. My mother told me this was impossible, but now I know more about twin growth I realise it is possible I was right.

You could get a scan at 8 weeks either by paying privately or by raising the concerns with your doctor/midwife and arguing for needing to know if its twins as you have other kids.

Just to update.. MW sent me for an early scan, because of history of MC, strong chance of twins, and the fact that she thought she could feel my uterus above my pelvis at 9 weeks.

Scan dated me at 8+3, and I was told there's only 1 in there. When looking at the scan afterwards I thought there was a second, slightly smaller embryo there, but have since worked out that it's probably the yolk sac (which I've never seen before). She didn't mention it when scanning me and I'm guessing a MW at EPU would be well versed in assessing early scans!

I can't decide if I'm more relieved or disappointed!

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

I could feel my uterus before my 12 week scan, I noticed it in the shower and wondered what it was, however, twins didn't enter my mind. I am still in shock nearly 2 years later Grin

It's possible. I've been awfully tired and had painful stretching and have already bought a pair of maternity jeans, I have a visible bump. Not to mention my boobs - ouch! I've also had sickness for the first time in any of my pregnancies but I had a scan at 8 and 10 weeks and both showed just one baby! Good luck and congrats either way Flowers

Well, it must be a relief to know! Congratulations, in any case.
