Hello fellow multi mums,

My boys were born at 32 weeks, they are now 12 weeks old but 4 weeks corrected.
For those with babies born early, what did you do in terms of weaning?
Obviously its still quite a way off for us, but i was curious about timing.
I would like to try baby led weaning, which is advised to tr. 6 months up. But do i wait until they are at their corrected age of 6 months? Or somewhere in between?
Any help or advice appreciated! Tia x

I would see how they are doing at 6m birth age, maybe offer some food then and see how it goes. Mine were born at 35 weeks and not interested or developmentally ready at 6 m but by 7 or 8 months were taking finger food.
If yours are 26 weeks old, sitting up and grabbing food off your plate, they are ready. If not leave it a bit later.
On the 'virgin gut theory', I believe that the thinking is that the gut has had 6 months of being in the outside world and handling food, it should be ready, even if the child is less than that in adjusted age. I may be wrong there and I'm sure someone will correct me - try the weaning topic.
Hope its all going well for you and that the next few months are not too challenging.

Do you have any follow up appointments with a pediatrician? If so, ask what he recommends.

My girls were born at 34 weeks and the pediatrician suggested weaning slightly earlier at 24 weeks. I really wanted to do BLW but the girls were just not physically ready. They couldn't sit in a highchair and their fine motor skills were not good enough to feed themselves.

I weaned them slowly in a bouncy chair at first on purees (one meal a day for a couple of weeks, then two meals a day and so on). Around 8 months both of them could manage a highchair and I introduce finger foods alongside their purees.

They love feeding themselves now but also like me to spoon feed them if they are very hungry.

DT1 can eat a whole tomato and DT2 a whole nectarine in minutes! They learn very quickly.

Hi, our girls were born 30 weeks. We were told to wean them according to their actual age, not corrected age. I was keen on BLW but found they didn't have the developmental skills to actually get the food to their mouths!! So we did a bit of a mix :)
