Miscarriage/pregnancy loss

Baby aspirin and testing miscarriage tissue

I'm miscarrying at 9 weeks just now. I had a miscarriage in 2007 at 9 weeks as well so feel pretty down about it all. I really thought things would go OK this time. I did have a successful pregnancy in 2006 and after the last miscarriage thought that this one might have been meant.

I've seen baby aspirin mentioned and just wondered if this has only been successful where someone has had miscarriages or if it ever works for someone who had a successful pregnancy then 2 miscarriages. I think the Baby Aspirin only helps if your blood needs thinned or something...but could this be something that you develop after you have had a pregnancy that went all the way. Clutching at straws probably but just want to find a way through this and time is against me (I'm 42).

Also, I did manage to catch some of the "tissue" this time round and am going to put this under a tree in the garden. I wouldn't have thought of this had I not read someone doing it on Mumsnet - thought it was such a nice idea. Do Early Pregnancy Units ever test the tissue or does it have to go to them on the day it comes out...I have an appointment for a scan to see if it has all gone and could give them a bit to test....but wasn't sure if this would seem really daft to them, or they'd just say it is because I am so ancient!

Love and hugs to all who are going through it at the moment, or have been through it before - such a sad, sad time

I am so sorry you are going through this, it's so very sad and difficult to deal with and understand. There is much controversy over taking aspirin, as some consultants say take them as they can help with blood thinning as where other consultants say they are now linked to implantation failure. I've tried with and without the aspiring but sadly neither way madea difference as i still mc'd! I'd give anything a try though as ya never know! When i had a mmc i went to hospital and they kept the tissue/sac etc for testing so i though but at follow up appointment i was told that they can only test the tissue if i had had a d and c which i didn't so if i had known that i would have buried all in my garden.

Takecare, sending you heartfelt hugs.

My EPU would've tested anything (I don't like to use the word embryo, but that is what I mean) that I could have taken to them, but that wasn't possible for me. That was after my 3rd consecutive loss last summer (I'm 43). I'm now on 75mg Aspirin everday and am now 28 weeks pregnant. Tests for blood clotting disorders came up negative, but not all problems show up anyway. Therefore, my consultant told me to take it regardless. I started on the Aspirin after a BFP. There are a lot of people out there like me, so there must something in this Aspirin business.
I wish you lots of luck.

Thanks Sue10 and Tabitha8. I had my appointment this afternoon and took a bit of the tissue with me. They said they'd test it but weren't very sure it would give any conclusive results. I'm going to bury the rest of the tissue in the garden and plant a few bulbs round it which bloom in March.

Congratulations Tabitha8 on being at 28 weeks - that's fabulous. You must be so delighted. If you don't mind me asking did you do your pregnancy test quite early and then just start on it the minute you got the test - ie as early as 5-6 weeks and will you stay on it until full term?

Thanks to both of you for replying, I really appreciate it.

Hello! The little burial in the garden is such a lovely idea.
I started on the Aspirin 2 and a half weeks after conception, which is when I did the pg test. I have to stay on it until week 36, which appears to be standard practice.

Hi Tabitha - thanks for your reply. Congratulations on your pregnancy, you must be so excited. I did take some tissue into the hospital in the end and they said they'd test it if they could. The rest I have buried and planted a flowering cherry tree close to it so I can remember it when it blossoms in the spring.

Hi smiles - I am so sorry to hear of your current loss. I went sort of crazy after my 3rd mc in Jan. I think it's a really nice idea to put it under a tree. For me, I didn't do that but we all deal with things differently. I just wanted to done with it each time it started, ya know? This is terrible to say but I wanted to literally "flush" it all away and not have to look at it or be reminded of it ever again. I guess whatever helps you cope is what you need to do.
I was also wondering about the baby aspirin. I've just started using it and it's been a week since ovulation. Tabitha - I see you started taking it once preggers. I read that women take it before implantation and that helps. Any ideas?
XOXO

I asked about asprin and if you have managed a dc then you wont have sticky blood syndrome I checked this with my mc consultant. smiles hopefully you can cross this off your list - But you know I am getting to the point that I think anything that takes away the stress must help and it cant do any harm - its so hard, especially when it happens again, good luck for next time
Hi daynee hope you are ok? good luck for you too.

Hello. My consultant told me to take the Aspirin for 3 months before TTC again, but I was already 2 weeks pg when I saw him. I've had no problems with implantation, so wonder what would've happened if I'd been able to take it as he'd suggested.
Smiles We had little burials in the garden as well. It helped me. Still does.
Mermaid my little bottle of Aspirin has been a real support in this pg and yes, like you say, it does no harm.

Hi
I've just discovered I had mmc on Sunday and I was asking my doctor the same thing about aspirin. She said for the next pregnancy (she was lovely very optimistic for us) that we should consider taking a low dose of aspirin but only after we have a scan that shows a heartbeat, not before.
It seems there is a lot of conflicting advice .. and I am sorry I can't provide anything more concrete.
This is also my second miscarriage but I have been lucky enough to have a DS in between.
Take care

So sorry HB, really feel for you. I have now been told the same as in not to take the aspirin before a positive as some say it interferes with the implantation. It's so difficult to know what to do when there is so much conflicting advice from these consultants!!
Takecare.

I've had 5 mc. One successful pg in between 2 and 3 and am now 34 weeks pg. Took BA with DS. Obviously turned out well! Didn't take it with mc 3 and 4, but did with mc 5, and am not taking it with this pg. So mixed results.

I saw a recurrent mc consultant and she said that she would not tell anyone to take BA unless they had the sticky blood thing (which I don't), but it won't do any particular harm if I had wanted to take it. Another consultant I saw in the general ante natal clinic agreed with her on this point. But after mc 2 (4 years ago now) a different consultant advised taking it!!! So where does that leave us??? I wouldn't take it unless postively advised to by a consultant TBH now.

As for testing the "products", my hospital tested for molar pg on mc4 and apparantly did further tests on mc5 but I haven't followed it up as am now concentrating on a progressing pg.

Hope you feel better soon. Its a rotten thing to go through.

smiles the whole baby aspirin thing seems to be a bit of a controversy. FWIW here's my experience -
1999 - uneventful pg - DD
Jul 2007 - mc at 8wks
Jan 2008 - mmc at 11.5wks, clotting test came back -ve
June 2008 - mc at 5wks

Got pg again 2mths after and took BA after +ve pg test after reading about it on internet and discussing it with EPU MW and am now 36wks pg. I've only seen my consultant once at 14wk booking in and she was about it. When I asked for advice around 28wks when to stop she said via my community MW it was my choice to start it so I could choose when to stop it. I took it faithfully 1st and 2nd trimester but stopped around the 30wk mark. Now, my bloods didn't show up anything and I've a 9yr old DD with the same father but after 3mc's on the trot I was prepared to try anything and it seems to have worked or the placebo effect kept me calmer than I otherwise would've been. The EPU were also an absolutely massive supprt with TLC the first 12wks in this pg so who know if the BA made any difference.

Basically you just have to go with your gut instinct I think, to me the risks of not taking it outweighed the risks of taking it.

I wish you all the best for a sticky bean smiles

I took baby aspirin on the advice of my GP following 2 miscarriages. I'm now 33 weeks pregnant but was told by my consultant to stop taking it at 12 weeks.

So sorry for what you are going through.

Hi everyone - thank you all for your great posts. Daynee and Happybump you are particularly in my thoughts as you're just going through it recently like me - it's foul isn't it. Ladyhelen, Scotlas and Llareggub your stories at least give me hope that I maybe can have another baby. After the first MC I really really thought this time my baby bean would stick.

Seems that everyone has received different advice re Baby Aspirin. One of the Mums I met at my Antenatal classes when I had my successful birth had been put on baby aspirin by her doctor even before she got pregnant. However when I asked my consultant about it last week she said that she would only advise it if I had the sticky blood syndromre - just as you mentioned Mermaidspurse. She wouldn't advise anyone else to take it. She did add that doctors are still learning lots about pregnancy and that it is possible that BA helps prevent some other cause of miscarriage that is not known about. Her passing words were though that she wouldn't advise me to take it.

So as Scotlass says it seems you just go with your instinct on whether to take it or not.

Wishing hugs to all that have lost a little one and sending out sticky baby dust vibes to all that are gearing up to TTC again after their loss.
