Miscarriage/pregnancy loss

Help.. I'm very confused

After having BFP on Thursday last week, I started bleeding on Saturday. Dr on Sunday did two pregnancy tests which both came up negative. The Dr said that hormone levels could not change that fast, and then started looking at me like I was going crazy. Yet I still have the positive test! (I have since done another home pregnancy test, which is also negative)

Feel like I am going crazy. The high of thinking I was PG, then the low when I started bleeding then feeling stupid/crazy for mourning something that wasn't there??

Is there anything that could cause this or did I get a false positive?

Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this.

You are not stupid or crazy. Since false positives are extremely rare the most likely explanation, IMO, is a chemical pregnancy.

Sometimes if the embryo tries to implant but does not manage to implant completely this can cause HCG levels to rise and then fall, leading to a BFP quickly followed by a BFN or your period starting. This is called a chemical pregancy and is really very common. Lots of women experience CPs and will not even know about it unless they did an HPT.

So I think your doctor is wrong. I hope you're ok. There are positives to take from this - if it was a CP, your eggs and your partner's sperm seem compatible, so that is a good thing.

maybe it was a chemical pregnancy?

elm I was thinking maybe a chemical pregnancy. My sis had one last year, got a positive test then bleeding started a few days later. It was very upsetting for her.

Thanks ladies. Have just googled chemical pregnancy to find out more.

Should have said MrsHappy: We are very lucky to have DS - 2 years old.

Then there is even more reason to believe that this is just one of those (crappy) things and you'll get your baby in the end.

Take care.

Hi Elm, sorry to hear you're going through this. I hope you've found out some information that helps. I've just gone through the same thing. I had two positive tests a week apart, but I was spotting so I went for a scan at 6 weeks, the sonographer couldn't see anything, and when I had my bloods done that day my hCG was below 5 (ie at not pregnant levels). It was wierd because I hadn't even started bleeding, so the mw reckons it was a chem pg too, the egg fertilised but didn't implant, but it hangs around long enough to produce some hormones that can give you a positive pregnancy test, but not enough to sustain the pregnancy.

It is so disappointing to have a bfp and get so excited only to have all your hopes dashed. I hope you have a sympathetic doc helping you. Mine was lovely, very supportive, esp as it was my second mc/chem pg in a row.

The mw at the epu said something very interesting to me, she said that the outcome of a pregnancy is determined almost as soon as the egg meets the sperm (barring some kind of horrible accident that is) so there was nothing you could do, it was never going to be a baby. I don't know if that reassures you, it does help me to think I didn't do something to cause it.

Take care xx
