Menopause

HRT that doesn't cause weight gain

When I was on the pill (many years ago) I remember it caused weight gain of between 1.5-2 stones.

Now I'm perimenopausal/menopausal and am likely to be prescribed HRT next week, I'd like to take something that won't cause significant weight gain. Is there anything anyone can recommend? Thanks.

It's a bit of a myth that HRT causes weight gain- none of the scientific research has shown this.
Some women find that the progestogen part of the cycle causes bloating in the same way as it does in your natural cycle- like PMT.
The main reason women think HRT causes weight gain is that around the menopause and afterwards into old age our metabolism slows down and weight increases, unless we cut right back on what we eat and exercise more. So- don't worry! If you keep to a healthy diet and cut out as many carbs as possible then you should be ok.

I am peri menopausal and had the minera coil fitted a month ago. I gained slightly but was told by gynae that this is just temporary and subsides, same goes for oestrogen cream I am being prescribed, so no long term weight gain

OP- just to mention- any HRT that starts with the letters PREM is made from mares' urine. This is now considered an 'old' type of HRT and not necessarily the best. There are other types that are made from natural oestrogen- the same molecular structure as we produce ourselves - and many HRT products contain these now. Most gynaes who know anything about menopause wouldn't be prescribing PREM type products now but sadly many GPs are not up to date and sometimes go for the cheapest.

If you want more info go to //www.menopausematters.co.uk and look at the HRT part of the menu.

HERE www.menopausematters.co.uk/perimeno.php

You will see that anything made from conjugated oestrogen starts with PREM short for Pre ( from ) ma( mares).

Thanks Pinkfrocks that's a great website. I noted down the names and will talk to my GP when I see her next week.

The other thing is that you can't compare HRT and the Pill- the amount of hormones in HRT is MUCH lower than the Pill.

The HRT you should be offered depends on your individual circumstances. However the lowest risk in terms of complications is topical oestrogen (via patch/gel) and micronised progesterone tablets. Look at my menopause doctor website for lots of helpful information :)
