Hi! First timer and hoping that someone will tell me I m not going mad! I started symptoms about six months ago ( I'm 40 with 2 children, youngest is 9). Hot flushes and night sweats, horrible heavy periods coming closer together but this month has been by far the worst. For the last three weeks I feel like my heart is going to jump out of my chest at first infrequent but now it's constant with high pulse rate.
I feel quite distraught and have headaches every day. Doctor has done ecg which was fine and is testing for overactive thyroid but I feel it's a waste of time! Anyone else had any experience or can give advice?

Have you had a blood test to check your iron levels? If your hg is low that can cause palpitations.

I am in the peri menopause stage and get palpitations at night since it all started. Cardiologist agreed it was hormonal and prescribed betablockers at night.

Just been back for results today and all normal as expected! Thanks for the heads up re hg but that s fine too. He doesn't believe I'm premenopausal as I'm only 40, despite lots of symptoms. Think it's a case of struggling on and seeing what each new month throws at me. On a brighter note my palpitations have been much better the last couple of days:-)

Look at the powersurge invisionzone website. Loads of women discussing heart palpitations with perimenopause, it's very common. I am also 40 my FHS levels are normal but I have almost every symptom!

Hi Fidelma. I'm 39 and perimenopausal. It does sound like you are too. I wouldn't take too much notice of FSH levels as they can flucuate from day to day in perimenopause. One month you can get a normal reading, the next month an abnormal one. This happened to me. One month my FSH was 11.3 and the following month it had shot up to 20.5.
I too have been suffering from awful palpitations at night, my heart races like crazy and my chest drips with sweat. One night i was so scared i called an ambulance as i thought i was having a heart attack. For me the palpitations have been the worst menopausal symptom. I also have mood swings, feel tired all the time and i have vaginal dryness.
It doesn't seem right or fair that we are going through this so young and i have become quite depressed. I had been trying for a baby for almost years, which makes it worse, 2 years.
I'm now on my 4th month of HRT. It has cured the vaginal dryness and the palpitations have eased up. I do still get them some nights but they are not as strong as before.
Go back to your doctor and ask for your FSH to be tested again or just tell them how you are feeling. It is hard convincing them, as most doctors don't believe that women under age 45 can be going through menopause. Just tell them all your symptoms and how bad you are feeling. You should mention HRT to them if this is something you want to try xx

Hi Esther39 I am sure I am peri I have almost the symptoms and some. I get adrenalin surges at night which are scarey. I have been taking magnesium which seems to of stopped them. I have just had the coil fitted but think I need the estrogen part now. I will see my Dr when I get home from holiday.

Thanks fidelma and esther I know it must be problems mid cycle as I am on my period now and feeling much much better thank goodness! I 've not heard of that website so I 'll check it out. My doc refuses to do any hormone tests on me but offered me the mini pill if my symptoms persist another month. I m logging everything on a calendar and will see a female doc next time I think. Although you are going through the same rubbish time as me it is so nice to know that I'm not going crazy!:-)x
