So I'm about a year into perimenopausal symptoms - with many periods being a week early over the last year (21 rather than 28 days). No hot flushes but some of the other symptoms, although not to a degree that I'd go to a GP about them.
But why am I getting now every single pre-period symptom - the ones I get 2 days before a period starting - but no period starting? I mean, as in, biologically, what's going on if my actual period isn't starting?
It's now 36 days since my last period - which is well over a week longer than any delay, except when pregnant.
What hormones are rising/falling to create the symptoms - mainly cramps, slight nausea, rage, water retention, weight gain and difficulty in losing weight, fatigue, lower back pain/achiness - and if those are the same ones that usually herald another period, why are they happening when no period is actually beginning?
For the last 40 years (I'm 51 now), I've always known when my period was about to start and the moment it arrived, with some mild cramping, I knew I was going to experience the relief from symptoms and lose about 3 pounds in weight overnight, with no effort, appetite decrease, energy returns, loss of water retention etc etc.
Now I'm over a week overdue - or even 2 weeks overdue if I assume my new 21 day cycle is the norm - with all the signs that my period will begin any minute, literally - yet no blood. So those 2 to 3 days of symptoms have now lasted 1 to 2 weeks and I'm fed up!
My appetitie is huge and I'm constantly hungry, though trying not to eat to much. I feel as if my whole body is like a water filled balloon - just like I'd usually feel a day before my period started - but with no respite. I'm cramping, as if my period has actually begun - but no, not even spotting.
Should I preume that a period will still indeed begin but could be weeks away and that I'm probably a step closer to actual menopause? But more importantly, why exactly is my body giving me all these symptoms, as if the hormones are gearing up for a period, yet no period starting? Surely if no period is on its way, then the associated premenstrual symptoms should stop?
Finally is all this natural or should I be going to my GP? Given that menopause is natural, I presume that unless I want HRT - which I don't - that I'm safe to get on with it independently?
