I am a long time LCer. Started when DC3 was 18m old (9 years ago) and ended about 4 years ago when I went to Low GI and did a lot of running. On and off since then I have made short-term attempts that acheived little and started again seriously in May. Have now lost 17lbs.
I know it works. I know it works better for me than almost anything else. I feel good when I am on it. I love watching my shape change from week to week.
But sometimes all that well-meaning dietary advice from the government, advertisers, friends, the diet industry really chips away at the foundations. If 'everyone' tells me that fat is a killer how can it be OK to be sitting down to a bowl of ff Greek yoghurt with some blackberries for breakfast? How can it be OK to eat mayo, bacon, cheese, not as an occassional treat but as a staple?
Went out for dinner on saturday to friends who are constant dieters (well she is, he is naturally skinny). She served us a lovely meal - chicken kebabs with salad and potato, couscous, pitta bread etc. All delicious. All 'healthy' and made (I am sure) with low-fat ingredients but loaded with carbohydate. I avoided most of the starchy stuff as well as I could (H helped me out !!) . I take a lot longer to eat than I used to so it didn't look so obvious. It just threw into stark relief how differently most people view what constitutes 'healthy' food.
In the past I have been evangelical about LC but it's pointless and just pisses people off. At one point they were discussing some TV programme about national diets and how healthy they are. She was amazed that the French diet (high in saturated fats) was the 7th healthiest. I had to bit my lip to stop myself joining it - it would have got awkward - we've had this discussion before!!
Do you ever doubt yourself? You'd think I knew better after all these years. Ever get tired of all the bias and disinformation out there?
