Low-carb diets

If you don't eat bread what do you eat instead?

I'm not lo-carbing exactly but I've given up refined sugar and feel a lot better for it. I know that bread doesn't do me any good and I eat a lot of it. They specific situations when I would find it very hard to give up are:

  • Sandwiches for lunch. I don't get a lunch break (6 hour shifts) so my lunch has to be something I can eat easily, with one hand, at my desk whilst keeping up the appearance of working.

  • Things that always traditionally come with bread or toast. e.g eggs with toast or soldiers.

  • Snacking on toast in the evenings Blush

I use a big lettuce leaf as my bread, so will have tuna mayo etc on a lettuce leaf. I used to love boiled egg and soldiers, now I just have them with butter and salt, and it's delicious! Never snack now as I am fat adapted.

I was a bit meh about the lettuce leaf idea at first but when I had it it was quite good! Couldn't do it any other was now.

If you have to have bread can you try a healthier version, maybe seeded bread or pitta/wraps

Oh, I always have "healthy" bread. Homemade, wholemeal and often seedy Smile I just have too much of it!

Why are pitta or wraps healthier?

Dippy egg is one of the few things I used to really, really miss but instead of boiling I now poach and have with spinach to mop up all the yolk, yum yum, or fry eggs in butter (huzzah!) and dip bits of sausage in it. Delicious.

Re: lunch. I eat at my desk while working as well but take salad - only need one hand for a fork! - or a sort of deli board eg Parma ham, fennel salami, some cubes of cheeses, cucumber sticks, celery, few cherry toms and olives - and pick at that.

Occasionally I'll throw some broccoli, cauli and whatever other green veg is in the fridge into a pan with stock, whizz it down to a really, really thick soup, chuck in a handful of cheddar at the end and take that in a thermos.

Leftovers are the best though, as require no prep the night before. Only good if you have access to a microwave however.

TBH, sounds like even if you just cut out the snacking on toast on the evening it would be an improvement.
I never snack now, honestly.

I gave up bread about 5 years ago and feel much better for it. My breakfasts are bacon and eggs so no bread there. Lunch - I work from home so I tend to make that a cooked meal. if I am out I would take things like hard boiled eggs or a piece of chicken or a can of tuna fish.
I will often take a plastic container for business trips abroad to eat on the plane etc of things like raw veg with some kind of meat or fish.

Nuts is another good source of good food when you are out and about and on the go although not great to eat in large quantities if you want to lose weight.

Also don't forget our very good friend intermittent fasting. If you have a very high good fats and some protein breakfast you may well not need to eat for over 6 hours after. One of the best things people can do for their health in the UK is miss a few meals and it costs nothing! We have got into the habit of thinking we need constantly to be shoveling food in all day long.

Watching with interest as I'd like to try low carb but honestly don't think I could do without bread

I don't need to lose weight.

I do loads of exercise, so getting enough calories without eating junk is an issue for me. I do need some carbs because of all the exercise. I probably don't need half a loaf a day Blush and would prefer to get the carbs from something other than bread

I would just have a basic lunch you can pick at. Chicken breast cut up, chunks of cucumber / tomatoes, chunks of cheese, handful of almonds etc

I've tried that kind of lunch Art but I'm still hungry and want a piece of bread and butter to go with it Grin

Hmm, do you think it's hunger or just delayed filling up? Protein ie chicken/ cheese/ nuts will take longer to digest so you prob don't get that instant full feeling of bread. If you ate that and then waited 30 mins are you still hungry?

Boiled eggs also good. Can boil a box of them at beginning of week and keep in fridge and jut take 1-2 out each morning and into lunch box. Don't peel and they won't be all smelly! Peel fresh when you want to eat

Why don't you have rice instead then. If you need energy it's not a bad way to go. Or potatoes... When you're out, eat sushi. Bean salads are quick and easy. Or you could try quinoa instead of cous cous.
Have bread occasionally if you don't have gluten issues and don't need to lose weight.
I can never resist freshly made bread in a good restaurant - I'm sure it won't kill me.

You can buy low carb breads which are pretty good. Sainsbury's stocks Hi-Lo bread which is delicious and satisfies my cravings.

Problem with low carb and gluten free bread is that they often contain lots of chemically laden rubbish which defeats the purpose of giving up wheat for health reasons.

I eat roast chicken instead of sandwiches. I use mushroom caps as burger buns. And lettuce as a wrap.

I make a low carb version using coconut flour, flaxseed, egg, cream and baking powder. It really does hit the bread craving spot.
