Low-carb diets

I'm considering 2 protein shakes per day and one meal! Any suggestions?

I know there are loads out there like herbalife etc, I'm wondering how good the results are and if I could use any shake?

When I was working out with a personal trainer he recommended smart tec diet fx! I'm thinking about having that twice per day and one main meal.

I wouldn't do it as a long term thing but just to give me a kick start.

Also I tried 5:2 lost 10lbs and have now put 5 lbs back on Confused also weightloss is slow with 5:2. I'm thinking if I could loose say 10lbs with protien shakes and then I could maintain/try to loose weight with 5:2 again then after a month maybe do the protien shakes again and again back to 5:2. I would be happy to use 5:2 long term to maintain my weight but I'm finding it difficult to loose with it at the moment.

I need to loose 19lbs in total but I would be pretty happy with a stone Wink

I am sure it will be fine if you don't enjoy pooing!

You need loads of water with a diet like that. Short term it would be fine but I don't know if the weight will stay off once you eat foid again. It's quite like the diet fighters at our gym follow to cut weight for a fight. Fast but short term. And the poo stories are horrendous...

Rhonda - wow what are the poo stories Shock

Well I was thinking if I could do it for a week at a time maybe more if I could manage it, any idea on how much weightloss to expect each time?

I am currentt 10.5lbs Confused I want to loose atleast 1 stone

Smart tec diet fx is a meal supplement, not replacement. I take one after a weights session. I wouldn't recommend replacing meals with them.

They do contain cla and green tea extract, and are one of the best 'diet' whey blends out there.

I often mix with frozen berries and kale or spinach for a breakfast.

Eating a lot of protein tends to have a somewhat binding effect on you.

The lads in the gym are not shy about going into great detail.

Kato - do you think you should only use diet fx if working out often? I don't always workout but I thought having more protein would be a good idea

I think if you have previously lost weight and gained, these shakes are a bad idea. They are notorious for that, so if you know if you're someone who's vulnerable to that, it would most probably just happen again. They are unhealthy, they trigger binging in some people, you can end up much bigger than you started and well, it's totally possible to lose weight eating delicious food if you low carb.

I just don't think you should confuse post workout protein shakes with meal replacement systems.

They are just protein and flaxseed with some other things, whereas meal replacement shakes will be more balanced if that makes sense?

And I wouldn't take protein after just cardio, only after lifting or continuous ab work.

I have a protein shake for breakfast nearly every day and one for lunch perhaps three times a week, often less. I use a pea protein because it has a complete screen of amino acids and is cheaper than whey when bought in bulk on the internet - Nutrisport 90+ Vegan, 5kg bucket. I always add the same size scoop of wheatbran to a shake too though, and be sure to drink lots of water/other liquid throughout the day. For a balanced 30-30-30 carb-fat-protein meal replacement shake I do a full scoop of protein, half a small banana, a measured level tablespoon of peanut butter, a big handful of spinach or a teaspoon of pure cocoa powder, a scoop of wheatbran, and six fluid ounces of water, all whizzed up in a blender. Add more or less water to your own preference. This will keep me full for a good five hours for approx 275 cals.

BirthdayMuppet that's almost what I have Grin
I use the protein works impact whey, a banana, peanut butter, almond milk and flaxseed powder with ice

So are you both using them as meal replacements to loose weight? Or using them alongside exercise?

A bit of both for me. I know from experience now that I'm better at controlling my erratic eating if I have a protein based breakfast and a shake it's the easiest way for me to do that. I'll often have something egg based at the weekend but school mornings are too much of a rush for that! Also it's handy to know that I can have a shake around lunchtime if I'm pressed for time for example, have a dinner commitment in the evening. Out of habit if nothing else I try and have one a day because I know it makes me feel better, suppresses my sugar cravings, and balances my diet which can otherwise be far too carb heavy. Using them at lunch time also frees me from the potential tyranny and temptation of too much choice- I know what I'm having and I don't have to think about food too much, and can concentrate on my main family meal in the evening. When I'm aiming to lose weight I do have two a day for two weeks at a time and then at breakfast for one week, and then back to two weeks on etc. I find that it really helps me to continue losing steadily. My weight fluctuates but by using protein shakes at varying frequencies I've managed to maintain a minimum weight loss of over a stone for nearly two years now. Protein really does balance my mind and attitude to food by dampening those overwhelming appetite spikes. But ultimately it's a tool as part of a whole package, I do exercise as well but that isn't enough on its own.

I'd recommend you do five days of the Zoe harcombe phase 1 programme.

I'm 9 stone 12 and I do this from time to time and it results in 7lbs off in five days. The plus point is that you're eating proper food. - unlimited veg, meat, fish, eggs, yogurt, seeds, tofu, brown rice etc. the downside is its dull!

Also , unless you're 5ft dead, you're not particularly overweight so is this a NEED to lose weight or a LIKE to lose weight? I often have to remind myself that I don't need to lose any weight ... I just want to!
