Low-carb diets

How to spare the dentist my bad breath?

ILoveAFullFridge · 14/11/2013 12:25

I've got a dentist appointment this afternoon. What can I eat for lunch that won't etch his face when I open my mouth?

Not my usuals: fish or hard boiled eggs!

He will be wearing a mask won't he? Grin

He may nonetheless not survive, according to my 'd'h!

Sorry I am no help. I don't know anything about low carbing. I thought you could have fruit. Blush

Have something normal. A jacket potato isn't going to ruin your diet is it? I have no understanding of low carb diets, but I can't see how eating something that won't give off noxious stomach fumes will harm anyone just this once.

The dentist is paid enough to put up with halitosis. Infact a dentist will be pleased to treat someone with bad breath as tooth decay or gum disease or in a few cases poor oral hygiene (please don't be offended).

Have you tried interdental brushes as they are more effective than flossing.

The bad breath is definitely caused by the diet, but I rely on dh to tell me as I can't smell myself.

I've never opened my mouth without the dentist wearing a mask so you'll be fine!

My dentist doesn't pull her mask up for me

My dentist only pulls his mask over his mouth. He usually leaves his nose sticking out. Confused

You smug carb-chompers are no help at all!

I've made myself a lovely bowl of herby mushroom soup with butter and cream.

Once I went to the dentist and there was a bloke having a cigarette before going in. He was the patient before me. Beat that. Sad

reallytired how entirely ridiculous, not only are you enormously judgemental, you haven't even read the OP.

OP, I'm sure it's done now but I'm a dentist and I feel it's my duty to tell people if they've got bad breath because most friends and family are too embarrassed to. That said, if you came to me (like one poor guy I saw recently) and said, I'm low carbing or in ketosis or whatever then firstly, that would be nice to hear but secondly, it would ensure I wasn't looking for some other cause of a smell like food trapping, decay etc etc.

Don't over think it!

The mask thing, well I usually have it over my mouth bcse if it's over my nose too then it makes my nose run Confused but I assume the patient doesn't want me breathing my lunch breath over them so I still wear it and if I'm treating patients then it stops "splatter" which is inevitable but I don't want it on my face thank you!!

Hope it all went well anyway

Don't you take your toothbrush to brush just before your appt?
Shock

Yes and I always call them on it "if appreciate it if you waited until after your appointment for a cigarette next time as that smell will be with us all day". It's truly horrible and smokers can have really awful breath.

The thing is with ketotic breath is that it's not like eating a bit of onion, the smell emanates from your very soul! Tooth brushing won't mask it.

In any case elf tooth brushing just before your appointment is largely pointless, if you've brushed properly that morning (and not even all mners brush in the morning so plenty of people don't bother) your mouth will be fine. It's what you do as a routine that makes the difference.

I waterpik, clean and mouthwash before a dentist appointment. I would hate if the dentist found something in my teeth. Blush

But no dentist would be offended by finding a bit of lunch between your teeth, what (IMO) we are offended by is the thinking that "oh, i'd better brush my teeth for the dentist". No, you brush your teeth for you, not me. It's far more offensive to see your gums all bloody and swollen because you don't brush them routinely (not aimed at ANYONE, just an observation!!!)

So in a nutshell, don't worry about brushing them immediately before. Just brush well, twice a day and all will be well.

I brush my teeth really well every morning and night. Could still never bring myself not to brush before an appointment. Just like wearing clean knickers for the doctor (not that I don't usually!) and brushing my hair for the hairdresser (not that I don't usually!)

Oh no the brushing is for me, so I feel nice going to the dentist. I don't like it when they get the hooky thing out.
