Low-carb diets

is it worth doing lower carb, rather than low carb, or can it not work like that?

I'm thinking of reducing my carbs. For example, I'm having bolognese sauce with courgette "pasta" tonight, but would still like to include some brown rice, lentils and beans in my diet sometimes, partly because I don't like the idea of too much meat and eggs, and partly for variation. Does this make it pointless, and why is high fat recommended? Is houmous ok?

Are you trying to lose weight or doing it for health reasons? If just maintaining, small amounts of carbs like those should be ok.

High fat becuase it keeps ou fuller & more satisfied, low-fat stuff has all sorts added to it and fat makes your food taste awesome!

Hoummous is made from chick peas, so can be carby.

Definitely works for me in maintaining weight but I did do the full-on low carbing to shift the weight initially. I eat poached egg on toast for breakfast, salad and sometimes a slice of bread/homous/pasta for lunch but usually a low carb dinner. I've kept all the weight off like this for well over a year now. If I do slip a bit eg on holiday, I just do a few days low carb again and it comes back off.

It depends entirely on why you want to do it. If you want a healthier diet, then yes - going lower carb is a good idea.

There is nothing wrong, however, with meat and eggs - they are very good for you.

High fat is recommended because it is very satiating, and your body needs fat.

It would be a good idea to read more about low carbing and the science behind it. "Escape the Diet Trap" by Dr John Briffa is a really good and easy read, and should tell you everything you need to know about low carbing and why it is good for your long term health.
