I've been LCing a week and am craving potatoes. I have read a lot about celery root being a good low carb substitute. I've never had this before and can't find it. It isn't in the local supermarkets (sainsbury, m&s). Where do you get it?

You can normally get it in saisburys and tescos, and I often get it at Lidl. It is a winter crop though, so I think maybe supplies are lower at this time of year. It looks like a slightly grubby swede. (tis yum, though!)

Thanks, I think I need to try a bigger supermarket. Will look in Tesco at the week-end. Can't wait for mash!

Waitrose/Ocado often have it. Armadale is right though, it's a winter crop so won't be in most stores...

It makes fantastic gratin and yummy mash so worth getting it when you can

I finally found some today, unfortunately I don't like it at all and it has a very strong taste. I am going to try swede mash instead, as I don't mind swedes.

I think cauliflower might be a better sub than celeriac - it is quite bland - sweet where I find celeriac a bit aniseedy.

You can make a great substitute for shepherds pie mash - use normal low carb bolognaise/beef for base but for the topping steam some cauliflower, blend it in a processor with cream, and butter and cheese. Pour on top of the bologniase and bake in the oven . This is from nerris and India's idiot proof diet (I think they even add bacon to the mash topping). I am not sure how healthy it is but it is delicious and very indulgent.

Cauliflower can also be used as a pizza base (never tried this but will) or if grated and dry fried used as a rice substitue.
