Low-carb diets

Does LC dieting affect breast milk - taste or production?

Started low carbing on Saturday, and not sure if its just coincidence but since then 15 week old ds who us EBF has been really grumpy, whiny, stopped sleeping through and do irritable. No temp or fever or other symptoms. Don't think it's treating. Anyone else experience anything similar?

I don't know about VLC but I have two friends who breastfeed whilst doing paleo and they have no problems. One also switched from a conventional diet to plaeo when her baby was about 12 weeks. You could try adding some sweet potatoes, parsnips and carrots.

I bf (for over a year) on paleo, no grains, very few carbs other than salad leaves and low carb veg.

I did find (google), at least one study which tested BM from this type of diet and it found that the BM was of better quality (more long chain fatty acids and more vitamins and minerals) than the milk of mothers on a standard diet of grains, processed food, industrial veg oils etc.

I don't thing you need to worry that your milk will be adversely affected by your woe, but now is probably not the time to go be restricting calories too much (I may have been low carb while bf but I was eating plenty of fats, avacados, KerryGold butter, coconut oil, and I think those all help with quality milk production!) Smile.

I suppose it's possibly your baby is reacting to something that's NOT in your diet (caffeine? Food additives?), mini-carb flu? But wee ones do get minor bugs all the time so it may just be a coincidence, hope she's fine now.
