What fats are okay to eat when low carbing?

What sort of fats are healthy when low carbing as I wouldn't want to push the bad cholesterol up?

I'm new to all this, so any info is gratefully received Smile

Any natural ones: butter, cream, full fat Greek yoghurt (Lidl is one), fat on meat, olive oil. Coconut oil is particularly good (get a non-hydrogenated one:HTC Pure Coconut oil is a good one which is very reasonably priced in Asian stores).

I'm not good at describing the science behind it: but if you go to one of the Boot Camp threads and look at the "Spreadsheet of Fabulousness", one of the worksheets has links to articles.

I think the explanation is that once you have ketogenically adapted your body, it uses the fat as fuel, rather than converting the glucose from carbohydrates into fat which goes into the blood.

I do know that people on Boot Camp who have been having their blood tested (eg for Diabetes) have seen their cholesterol levels improve.

I have an extra virgin coconut oil in the fridge.

Is cheese such as cheddar okay?

Some people but not all find that too much dairy stalls them, so watch your cheese and if you're stalling, then cut it out.

Eggs are good too Smile.

It seemed strange buying full fat milk again after years of buying semi-skimmed. Took a while to remember that I only needed to put a small slosh into my tea.

For more on this especially re evidence of effects of fats on cholesterol check out www.perfecthealthdiet.com. Don't be put off by the name. Incidentally they don't recommend going too low carb because of its long term effects on health.

I thought dairy was frowned upon, so how is full fat milk okay? Confused

Don't know the exact principles of paleo/primal but on Boot Camp (high fat, low carb) dairy is not specifically excluded.

You're supposed to cut tea/coffee to c. 2 cups a day which I never managed to do but got away with it .

Some people find that dairy stalls their weight loss, especially weeks 3-4, so will cut it out. Not everyone finds that though - I managed to lose over 2 stone in the last Boot Camp still having cheese, yoghurt, cream and milk in my tea

Ãœbercamp - 3 days of extra strict Boot Camp - doesn't have any dairy (except butter, which doesn't count as dairy as it is primarily fat)

Okay. I like cheese, but won't eat too much and it's okay to get the full fat natural yoghurt?

I used powdered skimmed milk in tea because it's convenient to have in.

I don't eat butter because I have no carbs to spread it on now Grin

Current weight loss since 7 January: 37lb (13st 2lb to 10st 7lb) Smile - Size 16 down to Size 12.

Cook courgette ribbons in butter as a substitute for pasta. Cook pork chops/escalopes/ loins in butter. Microwave thinly sliced savoy cabbage with butter. Cooked thinly sliced leeks gently in butter and then add some cream and bubble through. Mash turnips/neeps with lots of butter.

Fry (don't grill) streaky bacon. East the nice crispy fatty bit on lamb chops. No need to be scared of fat! Smile

Oh - and regularly have breakfast or a snack of Lidl full fat yoghurt with a wee bit of cream, some blueberries/raspberries/strawberries and a pinch of cinnamon. Yummy. Smile
